My favorite line: "[They] want to scan the area to try to figure out 'what happen?'"

Good review. Personal, my favorite line was "beware of God."

This was a dull, plodding, and cryptic episode, not unlike TNG's "Masks" or the more disinteresting, forgettable parts of Bajore lore on DS9. But the sets depicting that alien temple were impressive though.

I don't know why 'Masks' gets a bad rep. It's pretty much a classic exploration/discovery episode. No zombie borg to shoot at, no klingons prattling on about honour and waving their dicks around, just the Enterprise coming across a weird alien artifact (inside of a comet to boot), which does freaky shit to the ship; whacky hijinks ensue, including Data suffering from the android equivalent of multiple personalities disorder (which really let Brent Spiner shine as an actor).

Thanks for doing this review, Chuck. This is one of the Voyager episodes that really twerped me off very early on. I *think* (Emperor, less than 20 years ago are a blur to me) I actually stopped watching Voyager for a while after this, at least until the Borg showed up in Scorpion and I know I finally stopped in college & never went back until the series finale.

"Everything you've just been through is meaningless".

For once, a Vgr episode that tells the truth about itself.

I loved Masks, it was probably one of my most-watched TNG episodes way back in the day. The entire "ship transforms into WEIRD temples/jungles/swamps" bit could be easily explained away with very advanced replicator and/or holographic technology, and as Stofsk said, it had the genuine feeling of exploration as its theme.

As for this episode...it is the polar opposite of Masks. I did not fully comprehend the whole "oh stop trying to think RATIONALLY" piece at the time it was aired - I was far, far too young then. Now that I'm older, however, it does feel really insulting.

Another flawed TNG episode that came out in the same season as "Masks" that I'm fond of despite the cheesiness is "Emergence", where a strange alien parasite is developing in a cargo hold and messing about with the ship with eratic consequences (and the holodeck gets it again). I can only vaguely remember "Masks", the episode not sticking my mind for many years afterwards like "I, Borg" or "Unification" does not bode well, though Brent Spiner is often not the weak link in TNG anyway.
