Fun with MSPaint (Starship Design GIFs) GIANT-PIC HEAVY!
WARNING! HUGE FUCKING IMAGES!!!
First off a BIG THANK YOU to Dalton for hosting these ships. That said, On To The Show!
Star Surfer Ships:
Battlecruiser

Ferret Fighter (Ripoff of MiG-37 Ferret Design)

Twin Ferret Bomber

Civilian Ship

Buraaanian (Space Nazi) Capital Ship
http://www.daltonator.net/images/sn0/Bu ... geance.gif
Tech Level for these ships is just below Star-Wars level. The Nazi ship can BDZ a planet in the same timeframe that an ISD can, but only with all weapons at full power (no shields), plus it's about ten kilometers long. The SS battlecruiser is about three km long and four can take down a Nazi Dreadnaught with some difficulty. The fighters have onboard shield generators and hyperspace engines, although most ships prefer to use the Intergalactic Highway, a system of wormhole hubs rather like Borg transwarp conduit hubs, similar to the Interstate...

That's pretty damned good for just being done with MSPaint

Ahh the Nazi ship was designed a year before ST Nemesis came out. I still see the similarity with the Valdore battleship class thoFrank Hipper wrote:Nazi Dreadnought looks a bit like

And thanks for posting these,
I'll NEVER post anything I do with MSPaint, oh the shame!

Oh, that? Definitely an inspiration for sure. The weapons at the front of the ship are inspired by the Vorlon main guns and Earthforce/Minbari beam weapons. Also you can tell I'm a very big fan of the Gatling principle tooFrank Hipper wrote:This was the critter I was thinking of.Einhander Sn0m4n wrote:Ahh the Nazi ship was designed a year before ST Nemesis came out. Wow... That's a lot of time... for MSPaint, that is. They look nice, why don't you put them in 3D?Einhander Sn0m4n wrote:I generally take two to ten hours (obviously not all at once ) per ship. Aw, come on, tutorials abound over the net, from beginners to experts... It's just a question of will! (Sounds cheesy, I know, but adequate. )Einhander Sn0m4n wrote: I don't three dee them because I don't know how to use 3d programs to save my life...

Lotta big guns
Looks cool
'Ai! ai!' wailed Legolas. 'A Balrog! A Balrog is come!'
Gimli stared with wide eyes. 'Durin's Bane!' he cried, and letting his axe fall he covered his face.
'A Balrog,' muttered Gandalf. 'Now I understand.' He faltered and leaned heavily on his staff. 'What an evil fortune! And I am already weary.'

You realise that the guns away from the centreline are unneccesary?
Nice shaped ships though. BTW I thik Enlightenment may want you to inline those images.

LMFAO and Thanks, respectively. I like making sure every angle on the ship has at least complete, usually double, coverage by weapons fire arcs. BTW if you want, you can use the basic designs for your three dee ships too (ATTN Kenny_10_Bellys!)Rob Wilson wrote:You realise that the guns away from the centreline are unneccesary?

Hmmmm
Did I read you right, you have other views of these ships? If you do, mail me all the views you have of the first battleship and the Chevy Camaro civilian ship please. If you're a lazy bugger and only done the top views then prepare for a lot of e-mails with questions, or a ship partially designed by a fat Scotsman. I know you 2D guys do your damndest and try to cover everything, but the minute you try and turn these things into 3D you find all the things that dont match up, aren't visible or were just plain forgotten about.

Agghhh crap. I only have top-down views. I'm not looking for an exact copy of the ships anyway. Thanks for recognizing the effort tho. I'd really love to see the Camaro in action. email: evilsnoman@@@yahoo.com.com.com.diefuckingspambot.exe (remove 2 @s and everything after the first ".com" I REALLY hate spam!) Who, me?
It'll take me a couple of days at this rate to get an approximate shape down for the Camaro, then we start kicking it into the shape you actually imagined. I'd start it tonight but I have a works night out to go to. The battleship will take feckin ages, dont hold yer breath.

OK then, got a couple of hours at it tonight so here's my take on the basic shape so far. This is the shape I see when I look at your drawing, so let me know if I've got it completely wrong. Originally I though the tail was flat and would have 2 rudders sticking up, but closer inspection makes it look like the shape below. This is just the unfrozen nurb (technical, eh?) and can be pulled about like cllay until I freeze it. i slapped your original drawing on the top to let you see how it will look, and also to prove I followed your drawing pretty carefully. It's not got an engine yet, nor any modeled detail, and awaits your input about the basic shape...

As you can see it's not as round as perhaps you anticipated, so we might have to make changes to the engine or the body shape. Likewise the blue bit, it pisses me off where it is right now. We need to refine it somewhat, it stands out way too much right now, IMHO.

Einhander: Nice work. Really goes to show that skills can be a lot more important than tools. I've seen worse stuff done by people with Illustrator at their disposal.

It's not my place in life to make people happy. Don't talk to me unless you're prepared to watch me slaughter cows you hold sacred. Don't talk to me unless you're prepared to have your basic assumptions challenged. If you want bunnies in light, talk to someone else.

OMG!! That looks wonderful! I was thinking the windshield would be an unbroken curve, and the chin would also be smoothed. Other than that, it's pretty spot-on! You read my mind! I was thinking the front part would have an angular cross-section rather like an F-22 (see pic to see what I mean)Kenny_10_Bellys wrote:OK then, got a couple of hours at it tonight so here's my take on the basic shape so far. I've always liked the shapes that stealth fighters have, and used them a lot. in my designs. I think you're right about the engine. How about we borrow yet another design element from the F-22, its nozzle?
http://www.f-22raptor.com/pix/photos/cr ... l_20_b.jpg
I'm thinking instead of one huge engine, there'll be two smaller ones sharing the engine nozzle. I have a schematic of my engine tech that I can email to you or post to Daltonator, so you can take that into consideration when you design the ship.
As for the blue part and the textures, you can feel free to do as you will with it. However, I would like to keep the body-panel lines (lines where the hull tints are slightly different, like the darker-red on the red parts or the slightly-grayish parts on the white stripes; usually near the leading edges or high-heat areas; or areas like the cockpit seam.) I'd like to see one of these in a racing paint-scheme one day...

OK, I see where you're coming from with the F22 bit, I'll try and reshape the body slightly to reflect that idea. The F22 engines are quite a good idea as well, 2 nozzles will look far better than one huge one. Once we get the basic shape down I can worry about the panel lines a bit more, right now we just need to get it roughly correct. In fact, once the model's done I can send you a capture of the mesh so you can draw your own panel lines for a bump map if you like.

Oh kewl! I never thought of the two-nozzles bit... Only trouble with the whole project is that I'm in the process of moving to a new apartment on the other side of the city, so I'll be without Internet for a couple days (5 at the bleeding-edge most).Kenny_10_Bellys wrote:OK, I see where you're coming from with the F22 bit, I'll try and reshape the body slightly to reflect that idea. As for the whole model/mesh, I think this'll be a Trek-style mesh (which means decals and glowy bits) instead of a Wars-style mesh (lotsa superdetailed greeblies, no glow except for the engine bells). I also think a small step at the front of the cockpit would help matters of headroom clearance for the pilot, like this:

I think this would be better worked out over IM actually... My AIM is EinhanderSn0m4n.

Sorry, I don't have AIM, ICQ or MSM installed right now, I got sick of all the shite I had to field all the time. I'll bombard you with mails if you like, but basically once a night I'll do an update of what I've done so far. Once we get the shape to a state you're happy with then the rest is all just detailing anyway. Don't worry about the cockpit right now, once I change the nose shape to a more F22 looking thing I'll cut a cockpit in and see how you like it. I'll lose the image map next time so you see it clean, without distraction, and that should clear things up a bit. Next picture update, 5 hours and counting...
