Linux Programs

Post by Yogi »

I am currently trying to convert completely to Linux. However, there are some programs that I need to be able to run. I was wondering if the Linux users can reccomend programs for the following. I have included the program I am currently using to better give an idea of what I am looking for.

As you can see, this is a long list. If there is any place you can point me to that has a list of avalable software, that would also be good. Note:The software does not have to be free, I am willing to spend money. Also, I have read through http://www.stardestroyer.net/Mike/Software/index.html

IRC client with Fserve Capabilities (Invision for mIRC)
FTP Server (Bulletproof FTP server)
CD Ripper (CDRWin, Isobuster)
CD Burner (Nero)
DVD backup tool (SmartRipper)
DVD Frameserver/Audio Extractor (DVD2AVI)
Frameserver/Filter tools (AviSynth)
DivX 3.11 alpha codec
Smart Bitrate Control encoder for Divx3 (Nandub)
General Encoding and Filtering tool (Virtualdub)
Subtitle extraction tool(SmartRipper & VobSub)
Subtitle display tool(VobSub)
Ogg container
Ogg vorbis codec
Lossless compression codec (HuffyYUV)
MP2 encoder (HeadAC3e, BeSweet)
MPEG 1 encoder (TMPEG)
MPEG 2 encoder (Cinema Craft Encoder)
DVD Player (PowerDVD) *Since I am willing to pay, the open source problem shouldn't be an issue*

Most of those are outside of my sphere of knowledge but there are rather a lot of FTP servers available for Linux. There's a couple linked to here

Don't worry about trying to convert COMPLETELY; most people dual-boot. I use Windows for games and video processing and MPEG/Divx encoding, while using Linux for all internetwork-related activities (especially E-mail and websurfing) and webpage authoring.

Just bought a book called, Running Linux. It seems to be quite comprehensive, so I would recommend it to you.

Thanks a bunch for the info!
BTW, I've heard about various Windows emulators that one can use such as WinE. Are they any good?

RMS would say otherwise.

That fanatic is insane. He believes all commercial software is evil.
Oh well the FSF has contributed a LOT to (GNU)/Linux

Anyhow, many people like me have slow computers and do not like to duel boot, and emulation is slow.

Dammit it's linux, not GNU linux. Maybe someone BSD utils and make a BSD based Linux to spite the FSF. Nah, waste of time, plus you would have to replace GCC with ICC and glibc with newlib or ulibc. That means rewriting a good chunk of code. And I like Emacs.

Besides, in the future new software will be dependent on newer versions of Windows, and we all know about those.

For multimedia, Macs are better than windows.

Never tried it. Depends on what you are running.
