Various publication methods

I thought I'd note that an author I like has posted a series of books on-line, and made money on selling the books while he posted and then on publication afterward.

Just an FYI. Not to mention there are scores of authors who post books a chapter at a time on livejournal and then who sell the collected stories as books, much like cartoonists do.

What is the point of this thread, exactly? Anyone can post stuff online and then self-publish and sell the books to a ready audience. That's how a certain author here had published his works before. That's not how mainstream commercial publishing works, though.
