Huge earthquake off Sumatra

Post by LaCroix »

A quake, magnitude 8.7 was registered a bit off Sumatra, a bit west of Aceh. A follow-up (6.5) hit Aceh.

Tsunami warning has been issued for the region.

A minute's thought suggests that the very idea of this is stupid. A more detailed examination raises the possibility that it might be an answer to the question "how could the Germans win the war after the US gets involved?" - Captain Seafort, in a thread proposing a 1942 'D-Day' in Quiberon Bay

Strong quakes, if they are vertical they should kick up waves. But they are still only a few % of the energy of the Christmas quake so hopefully it wont be too bad - at least this time people will know what to expect.

Ah, this takes me back.
"The rifle itself has no moral stature, since it has no will of its own. Naturally, it may be used by evil men for evil purposes, but there are more good men than evil, and while the latter cannot be persuaded to the path of righteousness by propaganda, they can certainly be corrected by good men with rifles."

Some people on my floor said they felt it, I didn't.

Looks like we lucked out, no major tsunami etc.

Lateral movement, not vertical. So it was a lucky thing all around. We had just come back from Thailand a few days before this hit.
