Looking for something new.

Post by Highlord Laan »

Or, actually, something I've been seeking for a while. I'm a big Sci-fi fan, especially of the grittier cyberpunk variety, and I've been searching for a fast paced CRPG of that line. I've got Shadowrun Returns, and it's great, but it's only whetted my appetite. Star Trek? The wide-eyed and ignorant hyper idealism makes me cringe. Star Wars? Overdone and currently trends to the constantly force-related mysticism.

All the fantasy RPG's that flood the genre don't interest me anymore. WoW is kind of a drag. Skyrim, while fun, is just tiring now. I play D&D every other weekend, and all my friends are diehard fantasy lovers. I'm sick and tired of swords, wizards and bows. Ideally, I'd find something like Fallout 3, but in the sci-fi genre I'm looking for. The post apocalypse is grating on me now as well, due to how much I've played FO3 and New Vegas over the years.

Does anyone here know of anything that might scratch this itch?

Deus Ex (the original), if you haven't already played it. Can't say anything about 3. 2 was meh.

Arcanum blends wizardry with a tech vibe. See if it suits your fancy.

I assume you've played/are aware of Mass Effect, but for completeness' sake I'll put it here.

X-Com is more of a strategy game, but it has RPG elements which may or may not scratch your itch.

Alpha Protocol. Not sci-fi per se, but certainly not fantasy either. Excellent game regardless.

mass effect?
If a black-hawk flies over a light show and is not harmed, does that make it immune to lasers?

I love Arcanum - it definitely will get your cyberpunk-on raging. Nothing is cooler than being a wizard/mad scientist hybrid. (which is coincidently the hardest way to play it, since it means you will always have to change your approach to problems in order to keep your skills balanced, as overuse of wizardy will make your gizmo's fail, and the other way aroud, as well.)
A minute's thought suggests that the very idea of this is stupid. A more detailed examination raises the possibility that it might be an answer to the question "how could the Germans win the war after the US gets involved?" - Captain Seafort, in a thread proposing a 1942 'D-Day' in Quiberon Bay

I know you didn't seem interested in Star Trek, but you actually should give Star Trek Online a shot. If you don't want to be Federation, go Klingon or Romulan-- the Romulan faction is actually kind of downbeat as they've got Tal Shiar issues all over the place, not to mention they're beaten down and at the ass end of the galaxy as far as they're concerned. Your job is to try and bring your little corner of the Republic back up. Even the Federation side of thing isn't all "wide eyed idealism".

And it's free to play. Apart from the massive download, there really isn't much reason not to give it a few days' playing and see if you like it. It's one of the nice games where you really don't have to do much to pick up cool stuff, with the exception of the "lock boxes" which are overrated anyway unless you get lucky. Honestly, just playing through the game I've bought a grand total of one thing with dilithium, which was a bridge officer which I didn't even end up using anyway. The biggest downside of it in my opinion is probably the semi-difficult early stages-- it takes a while to get to where you aren't getting killed in almost every space mission. Or maybe I just sucked at space combat then :P
It's a strange world. Let's keep it that way.

Watch_Dogs, when it comes out. It looks like the developers really wanted to do a videogame adaptation of Daemon by Daniel Suarez but couldn't get the rights.

Replace "ginger" with "n*gger," and suddenly it become a lot less funny, doesn't it?

Wizardry 7 and 8 are old school CRPG's with a dash of sci-fi flair. Might be up your alley.
