Yeah, and when I was in high school, I and almost every other male played Doom. Hell, students even played it on the school's LAN during lunch. Guess how many shootings we've had. You wouldn't believe it, but the answer is none.

Perhaps the people I know are the exception. Just how many millions have played violent video games? And how many of them have gone on killing sprees? I remember a few years back a man in Japan hijacked an airliner, killing the pilot in the process, so he could try to fly the plane under a suspension bridge. Luckily the copilot faught back control before that could happen. What possessed this man to act this way you might ask; Microsoft Flight Simulator. He did in on MFS, so he tried to do it in real life. Perhaps we should hold Bill Gates responsible for the pilot's death and the trauma of the passangers and flight crew.
The most basic assumption about the world is that it does not contradict itself.

Did you hear about the $5 billion dollar lawsuit against 25 video game companies, most who weren't even remotely associated with the people who made the games/consoles/accesories the Columbine shooters played Doom with, by the parents of the students killed? The s of their children is a sad thing, but no amount of money can make up for their s. I considered the suit greedy and cruel.

Hey parents! Wanna keep your little angel from turning into a psychopath? Try raising them for a change! You know. Instill in them a set of moral values that teaches them the value of human life, Find out what they're up to, what their interests are, and in general being involved in your kids life!

I find it interesting that they throw out DOOM as the oh so violent game.
Doom is not even widely played anymore. Its long been surpassed by games like Unreal Tournament ( my favorite 1st person shooter ) and Quake 3.

I dont think these games are appropiate for young children but I also do not think they are the reason kids go out and blow each other away.

Come to think about it...Thief and Thief II are my favorite games! Does this mean I'm in danger of sneaking up behind people and whacking them on the head with my black jack? Will I take to carrying a bow with many different types of arrows around the darkened streets in search of houses to loot? Will I start hiding in shadows? Please! Stop me before I steal again!
I....I....I'm sorry...don't know what came over me there.

Yes Doom of all games
They never mention GTA 1,2 or 3

And no one ever compains about Wolfenstien

(I managed to shock a fundie into thinking yesterday when she was jagging on about Violent games and TV(Some of which Agreed, For example Cat-Dog, WTF? veeeeeery bizzaro show, just show em Sesmise Street like all the normal kids grew up on :D) one of the things she went on about was Doom and Wolfensiten and how you kill people in those games

I stoped here and asked did she know what kinds of people you killed
She admited no and I told her

Nazis and Demons.. Then I asked do you have a problem with your Son growing up and going on a kill spree on Demons and Nazis?

I was rewared with stunned silence and the little blinks that accosiate when a Fundie is turning on the brain
And then finally

Umm I guess not......
My work for the day I retired to the BEAN CAVE... oh wait I don't have a BEAN CAVE, infact I don't realy like Caves that much

I was going to mention someone along these lines but left it out when I rememberd you could play DOOM against others, even if it meant over a null modem. There also used to be a service called DWANGO where you could play Doom against other people.

But your basic idea remains the same. These folks often have no clue about the games themselves. Of course you could always, ask "Is'nt there a lot of killing in the Bible?"

The problem with all of that is that a normal person who plays violent videogames does not go out and buy a shotgun to take to school. In fact, the worst school shooting in American history took place before the average household even had a color TV!

"If a 30-second commercial can get someone to buy a bar of soap," Breen says, "a video game played for hours on end can cause a juvenile to act out violently."
Then this guy must have watched hours of court tv becasue he thinks he is a lawyer.
"In this particular case, discovery was not allowed, so there was no evidentiary record whatsoever upon which to base any conclusions of law," he says. "We have scientific evidence to prove a causal nexus between the exposure to various violent media and the shootings. The repetitive consumption of violent video games, Internet pornography sites and violent movies would make a juvenile more prone to commit a harmful attack.
Then shouldn't the all people on this board be mass murderers by now. But wait we aren't.

IIRC the legal problems associated with distributing Wolfenstine in Germany are due to the fact that German anti-hate laws forbid the general display of Nazi symbols. I don't believe the issue had much if anything to do with the level of violence in the game.

There were also problems with Medel of Honor in the rampet killing of all Germans but that trouble was short lived :D

Thats wrong. There are very few things that are banned in Germany. Games and media can normally just get put on an index by the BpJs (don´t ask), which means that they can´t be sold or advertised to minors. They are still perfectly legal for adults. Actually, two weeks after the school shooting in Erfurt (it was planned for that date before) there was a hearing on indexing counterstrike which was used a lot by the shooter and it was not indexed.

Thats about the nazi-symbols which are among the few things that can get banned (they´re considered offensive to the constitution). There is a german version of wolfenstein which has all nazi-symbols replaced which is perfectly legal

Ps: Do you know the one about a bunch of terrorists taking 500 lawyers hostage at a congress and threatening to let one go every 15 minutes until their demands where met? They got everything they wanted.

To release any of the Command and Conquer series Games in Germany, West Wood had to change the blood from when troops die had to be changed to a black oil color and the manual changed to say all troops are Robots. I don’t know what they did about all the killing in the cut scenes, likely just deleted them.

I admit it would be very, very strange to see huge German WW2 military bases with no Nazi symbols whatsoever.

Eh, Germany has become very touchy about what it shows and doesn't show. However, that kind of perverse 'must-not-let-it-be-seen' ideology isn't just a German thing.

With the Germans, it's Nazi references. With the Southern States, it's porn. With the Japanese, I don't know what it is (those are some crazy dudes when it comes to artistic expression). With the French it's restaurants below four stars. You get the picture. Different cultures have things that they keep 'locked away' for fear that you'll see it.

I was in Holland once. The sex there was profound. I have it on film where my friend and guide talked a *random, sober woman* into a five-minute groping session in less than a minute. Now, try to make sex that out-in-the-open in, say, Arkansas.

One weird thing about the Japanese is their porn. At least the legal porn. Pretty much like anyone elses porn but they are required by law to scramble the picture so no genitalia is seen through the pixilization.
