New Fantastic Beasts trailer.

Interesting. So Scamander was expelled from Hogwarts over something that sounds rather like it was ripped off from Hagrid's expulsion. And Dumbledore defended him. Wonder if a younger Dumbledore will be in the film?
Also looks like a political plot, and possibly a major Statute of Secrecy breach. Interesting.

Re: New Fantastic Beasts trailer.
Yes, apparently so.
Rowling recently published a bunch of stuff online about the history of Wizarding America, part of which involved the rather nasty history between wizards and Muggles in North America (though they use the term "No Maj" in the US), which ended in virtually complete segregation of the worlds, with wizards not allowed to marry Muggles.
I'm guessing that's going to be addressed in the film.

Well I don't expect Scamander was expelled for being the Heir of Slytherin.
I've read the history on pottermore, and I'm slightly confused because the seventeeth century section (or at least the picture of it) seems to contradict what was previously said on flame-freezing charms.

Yeah, I couldn't help noticing the similarity to Hagrid's expulsion.
Wonder what happened their.
Edit: One thing that's a bit odd is the implication in the teaser that Scamander can handle himself in a fight. I mean, is it normal among wizards for high school drop outs/ biologists to be good duelists?
Then again, this is pre-Voldemort, so maybe they're actually able to hire good Defence Against the Dark Arts professors at Hogwarts.

Probably someone from MI5/6; A spokesperson for GCHQ told the Sunday Times: "We don't comment on our defence against the dark arts."The Romulan Republic wrote:Then again, this is pre-Voldemort, so maybe they're actually able to hire good Defence Against the Dark Arts professors at Hogwarts.

One thing that bears mentioning. In America, at least, the wizards seem to keep up with the fashions of the era. There doesn't seem to be a robe in sight, instead we see wizards apparating in suits and fedoras. This might mean that in America, at least, they are more connected to their muggle brethren than their British cousins.

Actually, its the opposite, from the stuff Rowling put up on Pottermore. The two worlds are heavily segregated in the US due to past historical cluster fucks.FaxModem1 wrote:One thing that bears mentioning. Which suggests that Rowling and the costume department aren't communicating very well. Or that someone just doesn't give a shit.
But you know the saying "laws are made to be broken"? I suspect their's a lot of unofficial interaction. And at least witches and wizards would see Muggle fashions when they went out, unless they were living in wilderness.
One thing I wonder, and I rather hope the film addresses because its a mega-world-building issue, is how wizard America handles Muggleborns, or whatever they call them in America (they don't use the term "Muggle", apparently). They presumably exist, but their seems to be much less contact between the magical and non-magical worlds (notably, wizards and witches can't marry non-magical people). Do Muggleborns get ignored, with memory spells being used to hide any accidental magic? Do they get "disappeared" (either abducted into the Wizarding World or killed)? Shipped off to less dickish countries?
Re: New Fantastic Beasts trailer.
I think this could be explained simply by the fact that it is a harry potter movie instead of a harry potter book. In the movies, robes seem to be more one type of formal dress than something wizards and witches wear all the time.FaxModem1 wrote:One thing that bears mentioning. Re: New Fantastic Beasts trailer.
I think it depends on the wizard/witch in the books. Some seem to wear robes as a matter of course in the books, while others dress like Muggles (or their bad impression of how Muggles dress). As I recall, wizards are expected to blend in when out among the Muggle populace.
Robes are part of the formal Hogwarts uniform, but they're by no means obligatory outside of that setting, and maybe some other formal situations, yes.
Edit: Even Ministry wizards don't seem to wear them as a matter of course, from what I recall.

No. It's definitely a book/film split. The books have Wizard wearing robes except for when they're trying to blend in with muggles, which as you mention they explicitly do very badly. This is because they don't normally do it.
Though this is adult/older wizards. Harry notes the weasley kids where muggle clothing in the holidays. And his description of Bill's clothes before the world cup make them sound like muggle garments made with wizard stuff. Dragonskin in place of leather. Etc.
The films tone down the robes a lot making them more like academic robes/gowns than the full wizards robes. (basically full length manly dresses) And abandons them in a lot of situations.

This is, at best, an oversimplification.Crazedwraith wrote:No. It's definitely a book/film split. The books have Wizard wearing robes except for when they're trying to blend in with muggles, which as you mention they explicitly do very badly. This is because they don't normally do it.
You know, I might be mistaken, but I seem to recall even the Minister of Magic being described as wearing a suit rather than robes, and Cornelius Fudge doesn't exactly sound like a progressive, does he?

Dragonskin leather jackets are definitely a thing, yes. I believe Fred and George wore them in book five.
Some characters, I don't recall it ever being specified.

Maybe its more of a generational gap. Young wizards and witches tend to dress like Muggles, and the old geezers tend to dress in traditional robes.

That does make a certain amount of sense. Especially with the increasing numbers and acceptance of half-bloods and muggleborns during the books.
