Most useful vessel: CRV (vs) Nebulon-B

Post by RTN »

Which vessel has the highest overall utility and usefulness. The Nebulon-B frigate has a fighter bay, greater firepower, and has at least one extremely popular variant (Medical Frigate). The Corellian Corvette is more agile, adequately defended for its size, and its Corellian design is almost endlessly customizable from cargo hold manipulation, defense systems, has a much higher real space speed and a smaller target profile.

The Corellian Corvette doesn't have as much of an achilles heel in its thin "neck" section as the Nebulon-B.

IIRC the neck is supposed to be highly reinforced, but I agree... it looks weak and seems oddly unfinished the way the plating covers the ship.

In defense of the Nebulon-B though, as a military officer and not a warlord or something, I'd find a use for the Nebulon-B much quicker (small-craft strike-group leader, fighter platform, escort) ect

It depends on what you want the ship for. The term Escort Frigate is not thrown arround just because it sounds good. Nebulon B's are designed to protect convoys from rebels and pirates. A Corelian Corvette is more of a multi purpose vessel which is reflected in the fact that you can refit it so easily. Over all i'd say a Escort Frigate is more durable in a fight and as such much better.

The Nebulon-B FF can't possibly carry fighters - look at the scene in TESB! There's no room for it (and I know that was the medical-frigate modification).

There's a Nebulon-B CVL which is much larger, but that's hardly a fair comparison (see ROTJ and look carefully when you see what appears to be a frigate engaging an SD - it's not an FF!)

In terms of utility, the frigate wins hands down over the corvette. The latter might be cheaper, but is unlikely to have the patrol range, firepower, shielding or C4I capability that the frigate has.

The WEG deckplans show there's room for at least TIEs hanging in multi
story racks..

The Neb-B is supposed to have two squadrons. The MF docks on one externally in a comic I read ages ago. To get back on topic, the Neb-B is a superior vessel in almost all aspects, but you have to keep in mind that the CR90 fills a different role.

That deckplan is fantasy.

This is where the CVL comes from:

http://www.theforce.net/swtc/Pix/zs/rotj/brim3.jpg - the CR90 is in front of the ship, not behind it. That ship is a lot longer than 300m long (since a CR90 is merely 150m long)

Enhanced and blew it up in PSP 7:

The CR 90 is BEHIND the "wing" of the Neb B

I did a lot of checking using resized images and ready frames of reference
(Beds - a SW human can't be 20 meters high, and TIE fighters)

Basically, those WEG nebulon B plans are roughly dimensionally accurate
(to within +/- 20 metres)

I had to vote for the corvette, but by opinions are tainted by the fact that I hate that whiny BITCH in the Neb-B in Rogue Leader.

I would go with the frigate. The corvette I believe is exactly as described a "blockade runner." A fast, heavily transport ship.

Don't use the one from X-wing or Tie-Fighter, they are not accurate. They cannot carry fighters.

carries fighters and has more uses

Which means:

Nebulon-B
(1) fighter platform
[not to be an ass, but you list no other uses]

Anyway... I see roles as follows, so far:

Nebulon-B
(1) fighter platform
(2) commonly used a medical frigate due to easy ship-to-ship access, bay, and docking rings on neck
(3) excellent anti-fighter ship, escort
(4) relatively cheap and cost effective "ship of the line"/warship

Corellian Corvette
(1) planetary assault lander *
(2) Blockade Runner, designed to slip by a blockade by various means
(3) excellent anti-fighter ship, escort
(4) lower profile and more easily concealed using electronic warfare, so spec ops role
(5) cargo ship with vast storage space easily modified for liquid, gas, or solid
(6) due to higher speeds, a more appropriate diplomatic courrier

[*] cutout schematics from StarWars Technical Manual, as I recall, show it having a cargo bay on lower area of the foresection, and in an RPG source book I saw pic of one landed on a jungle planet

I'm pretty sure I saw a fighter in a Frigate bay... in A New Hope, at the end.

The Nebulon-B is not in ANH; you must be thinking of TESB.

And from the looks of it, it is physically impossible for a Neb-B to have a fighter bay.

I also recall though the bay they were standing on in while looking at the galaxy zoomed out from a large window and not actually the main bay.
