I guess so. In addition to what you just listed, I had to parallel park and weave through cones for my license.

 If that's the test now, I'm going to have to be more careful now when I got out on the street.

I know someone who went late in the day and didn't even have to leave the parking lot, though it’s was a pretty big lot.

I took one of those driving school things and then just took the card to the DMV and they gave me my license. But I don't think you have to show handsignals to get a license the standard way in new mexico, just drive around a city block...

When I got my license most people only had to pass the written test and be 18 or older. If you had taken a driver's education course you could be 16.
Every month the DMV picked a few random numbers and if your birthday corresponded with one of those you had to take the driving test.

Lucky me I had to take the driving test. I didn't have to do any parrallel parking but I did have to drive around town a little bit. I only got marked down slightly on shifting because I left it in 3rd gear a little long to help keep my speed down in a school zone. The driving test grader was a little suprised that someone my age actually knew about down shifting though. :)

Gah...pisses me off when peiople get it easy. I passed mine at the end of january on my third attempt.

1st time guy said "you didnt get to 30 mph fast enough for my liking, you fail!"

2nd time, the guy i was supposed to have was too ill to show up for work, so i got some guy from another borough to take me. This guy was voted out of the borough i was in because he was renowned for being unfair to people taking the test.

His car broke down earlier on that morning, so naturally he was in a terrible mood. All the way round i drive pixel perfect and he was tetchy as hell. Kept adding needless irrtated sounds to his words...i pulled in unneccesarily because he said so, and the indicator didn't go off. I failed because it was on too long.

Third time, nervous as hell, passed no probs, 3 minors.

I will hate the DVLA for as long as i live.

Sissies. I had to weave through cones, take high-speed corners, chart legal lines across a track, chart fastest lines through corner diagrams, race pre-driven lines, calculate max speed through banked and unbanked turns... And then came the wettrack. I had to spin the car and recover, fishtail and recover, demonstrate fastest-line fishtailing, e-brake slide, and power-through turns (or 2-wheel).

All with a manual transmission.

Granted, that's my racing permit test... but ya know...

OH NO! A manual transmission! LoL. Manual transmissions make you feel cooler and are the norm over here. Disabled/lazy people tend to use automatic.

I keep forgetting we have foreigners among us. :)

And unfortunately, most American drivers are both disabled and lazy.

I frankly can't be bothered getting my licence until I have the cash and need for a car.

Manual transmissions are better if you are willing to put up with them, I say they are better because if you use them right, you can get much better gas milage, and acceleration.

Driving test in NJ is a joke to, you drive along a closed course have to do a K turn (3 point) and parallel park, thats about it

*dances around* I'm not, I'm not! I drive stick, baby! :P

Oh, and the only way it would be easier is if you only had to spell the word 'license' to get it. But...strangely enough, that wouldn't have actually been easier, because then you wouldn't have gotten one, ET! *kisses ET's nose*

Sorry, babe, couldn't help it.

I probably should get a license sometime soon, but what can I say? I'm lazy. *shrugs*

I failed my first driving test - I had only previously undergone my father's tutelage, and he was a city cop (!) so my driving was pretty horrid right there.

It was all town roads, with some three-points, parallel parking, and reversing around a corner. I nailed it the second time after learning to drive, muhaha.

Today I'm one of the best drivers in the family (both my older siblings have wrecked cars). Only two minor incidents, only two cars (and I only changed because I hated my old one and wanted to get rid of it and there was my sister's shiny promising Thunderbird that I regret ever taking).

What burned me up was that the state of Washington required me to take their stupid written test IOT change my license from Arizona, and I've been driving since 85! I failed the first time. When you've been driving for so long, you don't consciously think, "Ah, I must apply the brake 300 feet from that traffic light, and I must ensure that I remain in the inside lane when turning left..." You just drive! It all comes subconsciously. Now, I find I may have to take a written motorcycle test IOT get the addendum, and I've been on motorcycles since 83. Ah, the injustice of it all!

And that was Watertown? I'm shocked! That's supposed to be the hardest place to take it at!

3-point turns are a bitch.

I got marked down for driving cautiously, but I was still above 90!

yeah, it was watertown. I must have charmed him.

though, I agree jegs2. been driving for six months, and I dont think about all the little details. I signal when turning, but dont think about where the signal stick is.

which was somewhat unnerving when he asked. I had to think about it.

You could say the same things about TV remotes, but some people don’t live to drive, nor live to change TV channels, so the automatic transmission and TV remote were invented. I used to drive manual, but switched to automatic, I find it much more convenient in rush-hour traffic, where you're stopping/going every 3 seconds.

Yes...I remember my test actually involve driving and what not...yours honestly sounds like the asked you to turn on the ignition and press the brake pad.
