Ship Info Help Request

Post by Solauren »

Hello All

Does anyone know where I can find stats for Star Trek and Star Wars ships beyond what I already have (and for any other franchise come to think of it)? As long as I can get there Name, era of appearance, basic dimensions, and a weapon count, I'm good. Pictures would be nice too. Just pictures, or only partial of the data I need is useless

I have already gone over these sites, anyone know any other ones?
(listed by Alphbetically by Franchise)

Star Trek
http://www.asdb.net/
http://www.ditl.org/
http://www.st-minutiae.com/asdb/index.htm
http://www.starfleet-museum.org/
http://www.treknology.org/

as well as the
FASA Star Trek RPG Guides (TOS Era) Klingon, Romulan, Federation

Star Wars
http://www.starwars.com/ (since they include the info I need from the Attack of the Clones Cross Sections, I count that as done)
http://www.theforce.net (the Technical Commentaries)
http://hangarbay.tripod.com/td-tf.html

Any help would be appricated.

I am making up a Space Tactical Combat game for doing space battles with (cross-overs especially) and getting stats so I can convert them to RPG games and do cross-overs that way.

If anyone wants a list of the ship types I have, I can post it in this thread

Thanks all

I would suggest the New Republic Shipyard Database. I think it is run by Nathan F. Sorry if I got this wrong.

I would suggest you visit http://www.galacticempiredatabank.com/ for information star wars. This site has information on most star wars ships, fighters as well as ground veichles and troops. It has very detailed information on each unit that could be useful in making a game. By the way are you making a computer game ? I am C/C++ programmer and I have both Visual Studio 6 and Visual Studio.net. I would be happy to help you.

Thanks for the link Evilcat

I'm a programmer as well, but I was thinking a paper and pen game to start :)

At this point, with the Star Trek ships, I'm making sure I haven't missed any

With the Star Wars ships, you'll notice a lack of non-Imperial ships at the moment. That's on purpose. I plan to toss them in later, since i have all hardcopy stuff for them at the moment, and the one site I know of, the Hangerbay, has a detailed listing

What about using a modified version of Games Workshop's "Battlefleet Gothic" game??

BTW, are you sure you wanna include every single type of warship from FASA's game?

Game system type:
Undecided at the moment. It will probably be a
"its armor class is this, your attack is this, roll a d20, get higher, roll damage" type game, like a D20 SpellJammer variant. I just see something with a hex grid right now. Rules like that are easy to cook up.

If I go the computer game root, I'm thinking maybe something like Sid Meirers Civilization in terms of movement and units, or maybe the Age of Empires engine. That's if I go computer. Or the 'pen and paper on screen' route for the lazy graphics programmer in me

As for ships I'm including, as of right now, if it's on the list, I would be tossing it in. That way you can go multiple cross over type fights (i.e Xvim the Despot vs The modern klingon navy, the Confederacy vs the Borg, etc) as well as Era vs fighters (Imperial Star Destroyer vs a Sith Empire Battleship, Klingon Neghvar class vs a squadron of TOS era D-7 Attack Cruisers). Those are just the ships I have enough stats for to use.
For example, on www.treknology.org, there are lots of fan ships I haven't bothered with, because they either lack specs, or lack sufficent specs and I'm not going to bother reading a picture if the authour was too lazy to spec it out. The exceptions are the Post Romulan war, Early Fedration era Romulan ships from www.starfleetmuseum.org. I'm assuming they have weapons like the 'last design' Romulan ship from the Romulan:Earth war, and less then the Romulan Bird of Prey from the TOS

I only have the 3 FASA books (TOS era Ship guides), and none of the rules (I only need class name, length and number of weapons and relative size, i.e TOS era Light klingon Disruptor)

If I can get more info, I will toss them in.

For example, I have a copy of a published Star Trek book called the Star Trek encyclopedia. Once I am done my web searching (probaby this weekend, since sites I am finding now are becomeing very redundant, that's why I'm asking for help) and I have the time, I plan to go over it look for ship specs. For example, I don't think I have specs for any Kazon ships. (I could be wrong), and wouldn't mind getting them. (How many Kazon ships does it take to stop a Borg cube would be fun to do)

For the purposes of listing what I had, proper names for the star wars ships are needed at the moment GAT, but thanks for the corrections/clarification on that (I'll have to double check my books later)

Anyone else have links to ships (Star Trek) I am lacking?
Or to Star wars ships that I lack info for (please note: Haven't done the Rebel ships yet on the above Star wars sources)

What about other Sci-Fi venues? What about StarGate Asgard and Gou'lou (sp) ships? (I expect the Stargate SG-1 D20 RPG will take care of that...), or Battlestar Galactica? Robotech? Macrosse?

Thanx

Though considered controversial by some Graham Kennedies http://www.ditl.org/ is an excellent source for information on star trek ships. It has vital information on trek ships such as shield strength, phaser ratings etc which are very important when making a game. Another useful site is http://www.ex-astris-scientia.org/. This site covers more ships than DITL, virtualy every ship ever seen on star trek, and while it lags behind on technical data on weopens, shields etc it makes up for it with excellent technical commentaries.
I'm a programmer as well, but I was thinking a paper and pen game to start

Visual Studio.Net? Oui. I'll stick with Visual Studio 6 Developer thx
Consider making the making the move to Visual Studia.NET if you have not done so yet. Sure it is very expensive but it is well worth the cost. As a developer one should use the best tools available. Visual Studio.NET is essential if you want to keep up with the .NET framework.
What about using a modified version of Games Workshop's "Battlefleet Gothic" game??
Tools such game workshops War Engine is good for making specific types of games. But for more advanced, original ideas a full, fledged programming language is required.

It would best if you copy star trek : armada ideas. Creating a 3D enviorment would be difficult and time consuming so consider making a 2D top down one. For most purposes the 2D top down view works quite well. Once you have finalised your ideas and have a 2D working version ready you may consider making the next version 3D.

BTW are you familiar with the directx API ? Otherwise making a game, even a 2D one is going to be very difficult. Even simple drawing programs I wrote had suffered performence loss when performing complex graphics operations when using the GDI. So far I have looked into directx samples in the MSDN cd and found that while it is extensive directx not as dificult to master as one thinks.

When I said game orginally, I never directly said computer game.

More then likely, if I did go the computer root, I'd do it in 3d Game Studio (for 3D) so people could create there own ships and models and toss them in. If I went 2-D, it would be turned based with original Civ-2 graphics. Since it would have to be share/freeware, going beyond that is a waste of time IMHO.

As for the links you posted, if you look at the list I posted, I've used them already, but thank you for your assistance in that route.

As for VS.NET, I'm not selling out $3000+ Canadian for a suite I'm probably not going to use. I'm not a self-employed programmer or even work as a 'application' programmer professionally, and any programming I do at home is mostly for my own use/enjoyment, or a quick little "whip up" for a friend or something, and that's usually database work (myself) or stupid little things (like batch files, joke screens where the close button moves around if you try to click it, or the occasional simple 'password' protection form). Going beyond VS6D is pointless for me at this time. If I win the lottery tomorrow, I'll think about it.

(FYI, I work as a Database programmer, and were I work still uses Access 97, so My Office 97 Developer suite does nicely still. I'll upgrade if and when work upgrades)

Anyway...

At this point, I have decided to say "all done on the net" for Star Trek data sources. Now it's Star wars and "other" franchises I am looking to find now.

Bullshit. Tell me a ship with a hanger that can swallow a ISD has only double the fighter numbers. That's just WEG being stupid. And it's underarmed for its size actually.

Take DITL with a grain of salt.

I see.... the difference in size between SW ships and ST ships might cause some problems if the Battlefleet Gothic system is used.

BTW, what about some ships to fill in the size gap between the ISD and the Executor?? Aside from the Allegiance-class, I suggest my beloved Hunchback Battlecruiser.

This game sounds like a really great Idea Solaure 8)
If you want SG1 ship stats then http://members.optushome.com.au/rogueone/Sgc/
might be the place to go. If you do go for the 3D approach then it might be worth heading over to thegamingunion.com for ship meshes. For other universes then the links on the Technical Commentaries are pretty good as well.

Thanks for the Stargate like, unfortunately, no length data :(

I guess I'll have to wait for the Stargate RPG 20 Book to come out and home there are stats for the various ships in there..

Anyone got links to other sci-fi series?

Battlestar Galatica?
Captain power and the Soliders of the Future?
etc

Hi again everyone

First, thanks for the SG-1 link, unfortunately, it doesn't have enough info :(

Second, some people (Grand Admiral Thrawn in particular) have mentioned to take some of the pro-Trek sites with a grain of salt.

I'm not trying to make a game using units of power.

It's going to be LENGTH, Weapons [Number and in-universe size] (i.e Type 10 Phaser, Heavy Turbolaser Cannon Battery), an image, and who's side it's one.

That's all.

Hull, Shield and Weapon strength is based on in-universe size and era
