As a former wrestler who contracted both ringworm on my arm and had to have surgery for another related infection on the crown of my skull, I can tell you that it's often a quick look-over and not a thorough search that most kids get.

The mats are disgusting even if washed daily. Everybody wants to wrestle, not necessarily "be safe." Only a handful of referees really care about safety equipment; removing the other guy's headgear so it falls over his eyes is a common result of a good move and, if never rectified, leads to an almost immediate pin.

Not as bad as possible, that's probably type I herpes, I think that's what they call it, where it's only on the face. Generally only comes out in times of stress, and even so not for long. It's possible to be transmitted to a child, thus I think I may have gotten it from my father who got it from his father who got it from who knows where, but it really isn't that contagious.
