New Starfighter
A star wars fighter I've been working on. Comments/suggestions are appreciated. I'm especially looking for advice on "realistic" design. Some of the pics are kind of big, so look at the links.

Well clearly it is for lateral stability in the atmosphere, I mean *Duh*, everyone knows that.

Good guess... this ship has a secondary role as a support fighter in ground battles.Crown wrote:Well clearly it is for lateral stability in the atmosphere, I mean *Duh*, everyone knows that.

Same here. At least a third of the spacecraft's overall volume should be devoted to propulsion.Wicked Pilot wrote:It looks awefully small to me. There doesn't seem to be much room for things like the engines, power plant, etc.

There's a lot more engine volume than it looks like. I think its because of the camera angle, but there's more space in the back half of the ship than you can see in that view. If it still looks to small after this pic, then keep yelling at me.

Actually, it was a three-way between an E-Wing, T-Wing and an X-Wing.Einhander Sn0m4n wrote:Nice, especially the cockpit and guns. Looks a bit like an E-Wing and a T-Wing got frisky in the back of the fighter bay one night, and nine months later...

From a model making perspective it's got some wonderful detail, but I think it's being subverted by the more simplistic body modelling. You have nothing but razor-sharp edges everywhere on the panels and structures, including a nose that could kill anyone accidentaly bumping against it. If you're using Lightwave I'd suggest you get a plugin called KW_Edgesmoother, which basically microbevels sharp edges so that they remain quite defined, just not as deadly sharp. I'd think about truncating that nose a little as well, it just looks a little unreal at the moment. Even chopping just a few inches back would go a long way to making it look more 'built' than drawn. No worries about the level of detail though, it should look very convincing once it's done.
