Time Travel

Post by Kimango »

Let's say we have a time machine. The kind that you get in, push a button, and it takes you back in time to step out of the time machine that convieniently comes with you.

Suppose then our intrepid time traveller steps into the time machine, sits on the chair, does nothing for 30 minutes, then finally decides to go back in time....15 minutes to the same location.
What happens?

I'm thinking 'telefrag', but what do you guys think? (tongue-in-cheek, i know these kinds of time-machines are 'nonsense'.)

Read Timeline by Michael Crichton. Its promotes the alternate dimension theory on an unbelievable scale. It is also helluva cool.

OK

In Timeline they are sending people back in time as experiments with possible commercial ventures in mind. However the way this works is that they literally disintergrate the person in this timeline/dimension, and they appear in the correct time in another dimension because of some weird effect. Problem is they don't know how to bring them back, but they are so close to another parallel universe that does know how to bring them back that they come back into that one and noone is the wiser. All fucked up.

Nothing happens. Time Traveler X gets a faulty circuit somwhere preventing him from going back in time.

This is true because IF the time traveler had actually gone back in time 15 minutes, he would have killed himself, meaning he couldn't go back in time.

It's just a different version of the grandfather paradox

Our time traveller has forgotten about the earth's rotation and movement.

I'd figure he'd defie the universe and it would lay the smack down on our little time travler. He would bring about the end of time by causing an infinite, self-destroying loop that would drag the rest of reality with him. Or maybe he would make a continuous loop of himself where only the sitting one observes his present and the time traveling one would become null when he appears in the same area in space and time as the sitting one. This would effectivly cut him off from the rest of the universal time-line. Or perhaps he'll keep stacking his mass with his non-time traveling self and enivitably collapse into a black hole in his living room. Just some queer posibilities.

For the sake of arguement let's assume that we're using a coordinate system that is fixed relative to a point on the surface of the Earth...

A sketch comedy group at my college had an interesting idea about this.

According to their "experiment", if you go back in time and try to kill yourself, Father Time (in full Catholic regalia) shows up and kicks your ass for trying to make his even more difficult.

It would make for some interesting Trek episodes.

Kirk: Edith!! (runs to save her)

Father Time: NOOO! What are you doing? (cue "Amok Time" fight music)

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA! Oh yes, a capital idea! Would make a great SF/comedy short subject film. Especially with FT in Catholic regalia.
