Third largest in the world? Did you stick culverins on canoes or something?

Well, if it's any consolation if anyone were ever to really try and fuck with Canada the US will just bomb the bastards. And it will only cost you Nova Scotia. Not a bad deal if you ask me. So maybe "Trudeau Lite" was right to sell off the navy.

You made your decisions.

At the end of WW2 the Canadian feet was the worlds third largest, by numbers. However most of its ships where tiny escorts and armed trawlers. In terms of tonnage it was much lower on the scale.

No, they just kept throwing four-inch guns on trawlers while the RN and USN sank the IJN and KM while the RM was nice enough to surrender and help the USAAF bomb what was left. The MM scuttled most of its own fleet, which helped things along. The Soviets meanwhile abandon all major warship construction in favor of motor launches armed with T-34 turrets which are too small to be counted.

Interesting. Did those designs actually work out?

Yeah, the Soviets built a vast hoard of them to attack the Crimea and they worked fairly well for that but there wasn't much shore opposition to the initial landings. Each one had a T-34 turret; a couple anti aircraft machine guns and hauled around a platoon of infantry.

Russia later produced larger river monitors with T-55 and T-62 turrets and other heavy weapons. The calmer waters and stabilization systems for the guns would have made them fairly effective. They got mostly deployed on the Amur River IIRC. Russia and China fought over islands in it several times during the 60's and 70's.

North Korea actually still has quite a few tank turret armed gunboats with T-34 and T-54 turrets as well. It was a bunch of them that where involved in that semi recent naval battle with ROK naval units. Against modern vessels they suck rather badly

Err...

RIVER Class frigate: 2,216 tons full load , 300 feet long (60+ built)
FLOWER class corvette: 950 tons full load, 200ft long (70+ built)

The RCN did do us a big favor by actually taking most of the brunt of the
North Atlantic escort duties, allowing us to concentrate our DDs in the pacific

There's no question that the Canadian's did a good job and that they made an important contribution in that arena. Their escorts did a lot to win the Battle of the Atlantic.

But SeaSkimmer's point was that in terms of actually combat capability the Canadian Navy was much lower than a hull count would suggest.

The USN's actual combat capability isn't that high - just give me enough
mines and the craft to sow them from, and I can make entire areas inaccessible to the USN.

Dumbfuck USN has only 26 minesweepers and maintenance of them are
significantly underfunded...

Neither vessel was produced in such numbers by any one nation, your River figure might be combine US, Canadian and British Production. The Flower class only number around thirty suck ass vessels before they moved on to better vessels.

Anyway, a River class has the mighty armament of two four inch guns and the Flower a single such weapon and such vessels along with destroyers where a minority among the hundreds of vessels the Canadians fielded.

Meanwhile the USN considered its 300 odd DE's to be small, and they mounted either two five inch guns or three three inch guns in addtion to a torpedo mount and more light AAA.

Do you really need all that to hunt subs?

Assuming you have a couple months to do so you might keep the USN from coming with 25 miles of your coast, Horary they cant shell you! Of course the USMC has recently invaded nations at ranges of several hundred miles and all the mines in the world wont save you from Tomahawk bombardment.

Actually that’s not going to matter for much longer. Minehunting is now being done mostly with underwater drones rather then trained divers. The USN solution is to give every new surface combatant a sonar that can detect mines and give it a suitable drone. Effectively every vessel will be able to do the job just as well if not better for far less cost. Other nations are doing the same thing, you wont find many plans for new-dedicated minehunters and sweepers.

No, but it made them far more effective against surface ships and aircraft. They also had 28-knot speed, while the River could do about 20 and a Flower 16 knots. That let them act much more effectively in hunter killer groups along with escort carriers in the Atlantic and also made them much better for the Pacific.
