Let us say that Star Wars was never made, George Lucas dropped film and became a railroad tycoon, made hundreds of millions and decided to burn about $100 million into a pet project he had called Star Wars.
Let us also assume, he would have this almost masturbatory fascination with CG and with almost no name in show-business, he would try to tempt the best he could get to come work with him on the project.
Do you think Star Wars would be a success? Would it still hold that magic?
If Star Wars was made today..

You can't really predict this, because SW altered the manner in which movies were made. Prior to SW, no one ever tried to make blockbuster movies. Star Wars became the model for the creation of action films. If you just assume that SW was never made, then the movie industry would also have changed in its absence.

Is it just me, or do I have the feeling that Star Wars would have been written off as a B-Movie with a way-too-big budget?Trytostaydead wrote:Do you think Star Wars would be a success? Would it still hold that magic?

I don't think that would be that much of a factor. After all, who made Harrison Ford a 'top' talent?Equinox2003 wrote:I think the movie itself would be just as good, after all the plot would
be the same, albeit with fancier graphics if it was made today.
I think that Lucas would have had a rough time getting 'top' talent involved if he were an unknown.

It might get made today. But you have to remember that back when it was made America was a different place. We craved a story with black vs white simplicity. Star Wars struck a chord in Americans and the world as well. Also, it was one the show that set the standard for special effects. If it had not been made in 1977? then some other film would have.
I think if made today it would not be the commerical sucess it was then. It would be considered too corny today.
