Okay, one of you geniuses tell me if I'm doing this right, because I was never all that great at math:

Total surface area of Earth: 510,072,000 sq km
Highest elevation: 8.85 km

Thus:

510,072,000 * 8.8 = 4,488,633,600

Or four and a half billion cubic kilometers of water required to cover the earth deeply enough to submerge all land. A cubic kilometer of water ought to weigh a billion tons, so:

4,488,633,600 * 1,000,000,000 = 4.48e+18

Or four and a half quintillion tons of matter striking the earth. Assuming a terminal velocity of nine meters per second, which is what I found for the speed of a downpour-level raindrop, we use...

KE = 1/2 * M * V^2

This gives us an energy release of roughly 1.81e+23 joules. There are 4.184e+12 joules in a kiloton, giving us an energy yield for the flood equal to...

43,448,771,701

Forty three billion kilotons, or not quite three billion Hiroshima bombs, or a good half-dozen or so broadsides from an ISD.

Spread over an equal area, that sort of thing would have easily crushed every mountain on the planet, probably shifted some smaller tectonic plates.

You made a basic mistake, actually. The Earth is a sphere and volume of 8.8km of water would not be surface * height.

It would be volume of a sphere that has the same diameter as the Earth + 17.6km - the volume of the Earth itself.

So your end result is lower than it should be.

The best part is where the produce the calculations to show how all of the deformation energy would have been harmlessly dissipated without heating the surface of the planet to the point where it would boil off the oceans. Oh wait a minute, they never did produce those calculations ...

I find the fact that it would snap in half the moment it began floating more amusing, though the possibility it would collapse under its own weight while under construction also brings a laugh.

Hey Lord Wong, when you get the chance to update the Creationism page one of these days, you ought to whip out some calculations and put them in their own section. Stuff like KE calcs more refined than this, deformation energy as referenced above, and so on. It'd be a great debate reference.

What about the vapor canopy! You know, the layer of vapor above the earth before the flood? Don't you know that's where ALL that water came from? Yessir, it was all just sitting up there for MILLIONS of years until the flood.

I've heard it got knocked out of the sky by a passing comet. Now HOW THE HELL WAS IT STAYING THERE? Plus, i wonder how YECs explain the grand canyon? Is that something to do with the flood?

yeah, I remember that floatin oceans argument.

apparently there were oceans of mist around the earth, and thats why dinosaurs were around - cuz it was like a rainforest worldwide. it never rained, just misted.

then god turned it into liquid for some unknown reason, and drowned pretty much everyone.

dunno bout you, but I think that kind of rainfall could bend most metals. . .

Rainforests would be a neat trick with massive mist clouds blocking out all sunlight with the resulting death of all major life forms.

My favorite moron Great Flood argument (wait, that's redundant, every person arguing for the Great Flood is by definition a moron) is that the countless species of insects didn't need to be stored on the ark because they floated on tiny pieces of flotsam
