Win ME vs XP

Post by Lord Poe »

I don't know why Windows ME gets such a bad rap. I have ME on my home computer. I didn't even know what "pop ups" were until the computer at work was upgraded to XP. Holy shit, this is fucking annoying. Can't they take whatever prevents popups in ME and stick it in XP?

ME is a bug-fest, but so is XP. Win 2k Pro seems the best so far out of the Winblows operating systems, but i want Mandrake Linux damnit! (if this was my computer, it would have been on here a long time ago)

I used to have so many spam problems with XP. I swear atleast 9 pop ups would emerge out of no where when I opened Internet Exploder. So I got XP pro, and deleted everything so I could start from scratch. So far I havn't had many problems, but I also stopped using Exploder and started using Mozilla.

XP Pro has never, and I mean never given me any problems. No crashes, no buginess, no freezes, no program deaths, no nothing.

Solid as a rock, as a GGI might say.

The version of Windows is unrelated to the popups. If you didn't have popups before, a separate program was killing them. Install it on the XP and it will be the same.

And if you ARE getting odd popup spam even if IE isn't open, then you have to disable the Messenger service (a diabolical spam exploit).

As for me, I keep my system nice and clean and have no problems (usually)...until some asshole heat wave comes by and causes my Maxtor to go tits up.

Trillian is not a window for popups.

Me was just poorly designed and push out to the masses, then dropped by MS in favor of the NT kernal.

I've worked on many PC's at my job, and I hate Windows Me with a passion. It's auto-repair programs are shit, it will power itself down and lock-up with no error message what-so-ever and just didn't have all the patches to make it run better like 98Se did.

Even for those who hate 98, fully-patched they run very stable (for a Windows OS).

I use 2000 prof and refuse to upgrade to XP until the release SP2 and fix what they screwed up in SP1.

2K, XP and 2K3 are rock-solid stable at my house. (NT4 was as well, but I don't run it anymore).

IMHO, 2K3 is the best of the Microsoft operating systems, and since none of the servers are enabled on install, it's quite competent as a desktop OS (especially the 'Web Edition' which strips out AD.)

The only exception was an old Compaq Presario P2-450 - that machine made any operating system unstable - W95, W98, W2K, you name it, it'd crash. Damned annoying, too.

How the hell do you get XP (the OS) the crash so often?!?

Sometimes the shell (Windows Explorer) crashes on me, and recovers in a matter of seconds.

And since I upgraded all the drivers for the various hardware, I havent had the OS kernal crap out on me.

Poe, the reason ME gets so much crap is that its the last OS based on the win9x kernal and never should have been released (its basicly win98 3rd edition, with some extra 'features')

I just made the Me to XP Pro upgrade and I'm impressed.
Win XP has crashed once. Only once. During installation, of course. I've even tried overloading XP to see if I could crash it. The worst I could get was that it slowed down and refused to open another program until I closed at least one of the open ones.

My verdict: XP is good. Me can be ok, if you are able to do the few regular adjustments to keep it stable.

He could have faulty hardware. Or his drivers could be shit. Both issues could easily accomplish that.

I have ME on Sarah and I've never really have any problems. It hardly ever freezes or locks up and I rarely encounter BSODs (like less then three or four a month for each). I only had to format once, and that was because a couple of viruses were triggered when I installed our dialup software back in December over Winter Break...

I'm referring to the Network Messenger service in XP that's automatically turned on.

Amen. This computer is the server for my network internet sharing and has to be on constantly. Current uptime is almost three months, which is since a reformat. I also use it *heavily* for personal stuff.

*Zero* problems. I think that people who get errors and hangs all the time, then bitch about Windows, are just frustrated at their own incompetence to properly maintain their system.

Someone obviously doesn't install all of the Windows security updates when they come out. You'll never get three-month uptime on Windows if you install all those patches, most of which require a reboot in order to work properly.

Sorry, but all my fixes are up to date. I simply have a stable system (very stable considering that pretty soon it'll be an outdated peice of crap).

ME has such a bad rap because is the most unstable of the bunch.

These "pop-ups" you're talking about is a service thats included in EVERY windows install since Windows 95. Its called the Messenger service (net.exe IIRC). Its intended use is for network admins to send out alerts to everyone on the network that something is about to happen, etc. Now, its mainly used for spammers.

To kill it, go into your control panel (I'm assuming that you have admin privilges.) and double-click on Administrator Tools. Double-click on Services and scroll down till you see "Messenger". Double-click on it and click on the pull-down menu. Select "Disabled" and click on apply. The service will stop, and you'll never see one of those annoying windows ever again. :)

heh, that reminds me, I used to have a batch file made that sent a message using the messanger service a large number of times (2 million, I think I set it at). The person who it happened to would have to click all those boxes, ignore them (they pop up on top of everything, and right in the middle), or turn off his comp... good times...

Oddly, my RH9 box never had that kind of uptime as RH kept informing me of kernel-level security updates that required a reboot...

Restarts are indeed annoying, though (especially if you have a huge AD box that needs a loooong while to reboot)
