Well in my opinion it doesn't seem really that bad.

But we should wait and see what a few NK officials say about it.

Looks like a small border scuffle. Unfortunately, at this border, things could magnify quickly...

Two seconds of machine gun fire and no losses isn't going to spark anything. The far larger naval engagement a while back didn't.

Small fire fights like this are not uncommon, high tensions or not. I dont think this will aggrivate anything.

I think back in the 70's some NK soldiers hacked an American soldier to death with a machete or something like that. There are more incidents along the DMZ than they have cared to tell us.

If I'm not mistaken there was an incident like that in Germany actually. But then again Korea's got enough problems that something like that could have happened.

And Korea has had plenty of violence. This sort of incident happens with depressing frequency.

Nothing new. A ceasefire isn't.

90 US soldiers have died in such "incidents" since 1953. South Korea has lost nearly 400. North Korean losses are around 900-1000, many of them infiltrators killed deep within the South. Anyone else remember the sub that beached in 1996 and the ensuring six week bloody hunt for the commandoes it landed?

Let's just say a North Korean sniper with a .50 cal rifle goes around disintegrating people with it, killing say five soldiers a week. Response?

Probably sniper fire in return after the first couple incidents, which would be met with rifle and machine gun fire. It would also depend on if the troops hit where killed while on patrol in the South's half of the DMZ or if they where troops manning boarder fortifications in South Korean territory, since that would require the sniper to enter the Southern part of the DMZ to get a shot. It would also make an ambush possibul.
