the only reason we had such a hard time against the North last time was because of the chinese involvement, and after that the only reason we didn't go balls to the wall was because we didn't want to piss off the Soviets. North Korea is either going to have a huge ass nuke which will work reliability but weighs 10,000 pounds, or a small device which weights perhaps 1000 pound but will fizzle 90% of the time and make there test yet another a laughing stock of the defence community. Because most of the population of that region is related, sometimes extremely closely, to those refugees. The Chinese authorities actively root them out and send them back. The families are the ones who keep them in.

Many chinese academics are right now defending that an united Korea (Southernized) would in fact be good to China in the long term, as it would give no more reasons for the U.S to keep forces in SK (and SK doesn't exactly love the american forces). That fact, together with improved comercial and political relations would push SK towards China's sphere of influence, thus enlarging it and diminishing that of the U.S.

That's part of it though. The Chinese are dealing with this problem for years now and if they really wanted it stopped they probably could, and the NK's don't seem to be rigorously patrolling their side of the border, essentially pulling a Castro and hoping that the troublemakers leave and some other counrty has to deal with them.

Kim should pull a Governor Kodos move and start executing people to save on food. Or he could simply launch a military action in the vain hope that his nation doesn't get glassed in reprisal. He may even be counting on the Chinese to get involved no matter what. In many ways he has nothing to lose and for the criminally insane that is a bad position for the rest of us to see him in.

The PRC will not support the North in a war. It could not gain anything from it and yet stand to lose a great deal. Indeed if the North goes to war and collapses the refugee issue will go away fairly quickly since the South and the UN will be busy dealing with feeding them all and the Chinese can simply tell them "go south, foods that way"

Kim Dong Small needs to be dealt with NOW. A first strike against Pyongyang is, sadly, in this case necessary. A decisive air strike against the artillery pieces aimed at Seoul, and then taking out all known nuclear missile sites and facilities, along with taking out the early warning radar.
