Dortmund is part of the Ruhrgebiet (name of the region around the river Ruhr), basically the place is one big old-industrialized area. It's also the home of one of our best soccer teams, though Brügge kicked their ass just because Amoroso fucked up!!!

The Ruhr megapolis where Dortmund is located is one of the largest urban sprawls in Europe. Since Ruhr used to be the industrial heart of West Germany, it's well-developed, though somewhat polluted -- at least compared to Portugal.

If you are gonna start studies in Germany, all I can do is wish you luck. Knowledge of Deutsch would naturally be a huge help, though it's not that hard language if you are willing to do something about it.

I've studied it for five years and my German sucks, though I was a lazy bastard on my German lessons at high-school.

They also hve the annual Sparkssen Chess Tournament, where super GMs battle it out every August. Next year'll be the 33rd year.
