Haptic and holograph tech? Are the Fivers around here thinking what I'm thinking?
Any job worth doing with a laser is worth doing with many, many lasers. -Khrima
There's just no arguing with some people once they've made their minds up about something, and I accept that. That's why I kill them. -Othar Avatar credit
Holy Hell thats incredible! I had always thought this technology was still just a pipe dream that may never even be possible. This is a phenomenal breakthrough IMO.

My professor Dr Bob Summers told me about something he worked on that did that but required a screen to make it work but with 3 lasers they hadd made a true 3D multicolor display. It greived him the company never did anything with it. That is real neat a 2D holo display, makes my technology in my story Spacewolf even more plausible!

That was disapointing ..Should we show this Federation how to build a ship so we may have worthy foes? Typhonis 1

the technology supposedly could produce unidirectional displays. if thats so, you can have a 3D object that emits light away from its surface and not towards the inside like you'd get with an omnidirectional display. That would mean that you wouldn't have the problem of seeing the other side of the 3D object.

Actually, technology of this sort has existed for some time, but the advantage of this setup is that it is far cheaper than other solutions. I saw it on slashdot awhile back.
I would've said....IT'S DAMN COOL...but that would be a me too post heh.
I can imagine it now.... a year or so later a replica of the holoprojector on O-1 will be made featuring Endor and the Death Star....~Jason
I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season."
Well, considering that the title is currently a broken sentence that forces members to open the thread just to finish reading it, I'd say it's pretty bad.
Better would be "Free Floating Holograms in Development" or something like that...

Now, if only they can produce ST quality holograms.
Holodeck here I come!

Something like total immersion video games in Red Dwarf would be a better idea. I'd rather have information fed directly into my brain through a headset than have to go through surgery to get something put into my eyes so I can see stuff I can't even touch...

That would be nice, but the technology for direct connections like that is just way too far off. Right now, atleast we have rudimentary optical implants. We have no rudimentary neural interfaces.

What we can disclose is that the device modifies the properties of air within a localized environment. Air comes into the device, is ejected and illuminated using a proprietary technique in which the photons and air produce the visible image. There is no harmful gas or liquid. Nothing needs to be refilled. It is just ambient air. The image, furthermore, is interactive as a virtual touchscreen allowing a hand or finger to be used as a mouse.
