I expressed my views in a thread I started this morning. One thing I did not mention there was that this recall like many of California's "koo-koo politics" may end up striking a chord with all the angry voters in other states who will put their politicians on notice.
Time will tell if the recall and the aftermath has the same effect on the other Western states as Prop 13 did during the tax rebellion of the 1970's.

You know Warren Buffet pays fewer property taxes on his $4.2 million home in Laguna Beach, CA than his $500,000 Omaha, NE home?TrailerParkJawa wrote:I expressed my views in a thread I started this morning. The reason? Because his property tax rates were frozen.

Yes, I know all about Prop 13. Im a property owner myself. Do you know what Warren Buffet can do if he feels it is unfair to pay such low taxes? Ask the County to reassess his house. They would be happy too. Prop 13 got passed for a reasons that have not been properly addressed to this day. ie) The current budget deficit is a nice example.Darth Fanboy wrote:

The education system was better off before Prop 13, but local govts were raping property owners and seniors with static incomes could not pay their taxes. The Yosemite Bear wrote:And before Prop 13 we had a WONDERFUL education program too....
Would you like it if you owned a house your whole life, paided your taxes, obeyed the law, only to have the govt take your house because of skyrocketing home values make your tax bill unaffordable?
Prop 13 is not perfect, it started wheels in motion Im not sure they realized, but it was needed at the time to stop the abuses of local govts. Now the hard part is what can we do to tweak it.

I was clarifying this for those that did not. But I will say that Warren Buffet does make up for it by being one of the more charitable people in the country. And even if he did have his house re assesed He would be one of few, if not alone, in doing so. I pointed out Buffett because its the one exact examle I can pull off the top of my headTrailerParkJawa wrote:Yes, I know all about Prop 13. Im a property owner myself. Buffet is a great example. I thought you were talking to me in general.Darth Fanboy wrote: I was clarifying this for those that did not. Ive never heard of anyone reassesing their homes unless local property values have dropped which does happen from time to time.
Prop 13 does not freeze taxes entirely however, they can go up just at a very low rate. My house was 249,950 on paper in 2002. For 2003 the county is saying the assessed value is 254,000.

I didn't vote. I had intended to, but I never got around to registering.
Oh well, no matter what I would have voted for, it wouldn't have changed anything.

And you may ask yourself, 'Where does that highway go to?'
