CPU burnout
My friend has a compaq presario(sp) 5000 that's cpu might of burn out. He was running it and then the fan stopped working and the comp shut down. Is there any way that he can get a new CPU or fix this? He doens't want to buy a new comp as his parents will kill him if they find out it broke.

And if the worst HAS occurred, tell your friends to remind his parents that it 1. wasn't his fault and 2. that a replacement CPU is probably relatively cheap.

If he can remove the fan, he can replace the processor. However, some OEM boxes have their heatsinks and fans more or less bolted down.
A quick Google search shows that it uses an AMD Athlon 1.3GHz. This is almost certainly the Thunderbird core. Unfortunately, it also appears to use a 200MHz FSB (clock-doubled 100MHz) and those processors are rare. He may be able to get a 1.33GHz processor running if his motherboard supports running his proc at 266 (133*2) and his RAM at 100.

His system isn't burnt out, his system is probably unstable from all the crap he's put on it.
1. Have him go to Windows Update and install every patch the website reports.
2. Run HiJackThis! and Spybot Search and Destroy to clean out trojans and spyware from his machine.
3. Berate him for being an idiot.
4. Search his machine for stupid applications that he doesn't need and kill them.
5. Consider upgrading him to a decent operating system such as Windows 2000 or Windows XP ... legally, of course. Your university may have it for severely discounted prices.

His problem is WinME. He either needs to upgrade to Win98 (yes, 98 is FAR more stable) or Win2k/XP Pro. However, I doubt that'll happen so he needs to back his data up and use his restore disk.

Shit, I just realized that his machine can't even access the network without crashing. It's time to nuke that machine and re-install (after a backup, of course).Vertigo1 wrote:His problem is WinME.
