Stravo's Dad says: "Bush/McCain 2004"
My father calls me this morning and says "I'm telling you this before Dan Rather or anyone else. Cheney will drop out as VP this election year." I nodded as I was tying my boots on. "Yeah dad, that sounds reasonable, I know the only reason he even became veep was as a favor to Bush's dad."
"But I also predict that McCain will be his new running mate."
"Dad, McCain hates Bush."
"So? It woud be a devastating ticket." *reminds me to tease dad since this means Kerry is making him nervous*
"But dad, they aren't remotely friendly. In my opinion Bush stole the nomination from McCain." *Dad snorts derisively*
"Look, he's been campaiging for Bush rather heavily and I think he's angling for a spot on the ticket. You just keep your eyes open for the announcement. Then you can say your dad predicted it."
So here I am enshrining my father's prediction. Anyone have any thoughts on this possibility?

I see McCain running with Dean before I see him running with Bush.

"Right now we can tell you a report was filed by the family of a 12 year old boy yesterday afternoon alleging Mr. Michael Jackson of criminal activity. A search warrant has been filed and that search is currently taking place. Mr. Jackson has not been charged with any crime. We cannot specifically address the content of the police report as it is confidential information at the present time, however, we can confirm that Mr. Jackson forced the boy to listen to the Howard Stern show and watch the movie Private Parts over and over again."
Well, I wouldn't be surprised if they dropped Cheney from the ticket in 2004, but McCain definitely wouldn't be his replacement.
McCain and Bush tend to differ on domestic policy in a huge way, but on foreign policy they're in the same boat. If anything, McCain is more hawkish than Bush.

I'm studying for the CPA exam. Have a nice summer, and if you're down just sit back and realize that Joe is off somewhere, doing much worse than you are.
But he backs that up at home too, instead of fucking over veterans and reserve troops while the American public watches elsewhere.
Howedar is no longer here. Need to talk to him? Talk to Pick.
Cheney out on his arse? I wish. I doubt he'd give it up though. Of course, he is an embarassment and a focal point for all the focus on neoconservatives.

Adding McCain, especially in place of Cheney, might do some good to lessen the complaints about the Bush administration being completely owned by big business. This would mostly be due to McCain's record on attempting campaign finance reform and the dumping of Cheney. I think McCain on the ticket would definately make it a stronger ticket than Bush/Cheney.
I have to wonder if the Republicans would be willing to go that route though since if they win that means in 4 years McCain will have to be considered one of the top canidates to replace Bush and the hard core portion of the Republican party doesn't appear to like McCain all that much. One of these days though, the party is going to have to stop catering to so much to the far right if it wants to keep in power.
Perhaps having McCain as his running mate would allow Bush to drift a little more towards the center which is where he appeared to be situated until he had to drift right to compete with McCain in the Republican primaries.

Stravo this just isn't going to happen. I agree that Cheney is out (if only for the fact that he isn't going to be the next Presidency, which is the traditional role of the Vice President on a second term) but there is no way that McCain is in.
For one thing, McCain has been way too vocal about his dislike of Bush. He may support him, but he has made it clear that it is due to a devotion to his party, not to the man. It would detract from the Bush campaign's credibility to have him as Vice President, not to mention it would piss off a great deal of Bush's extreme right-wing supporters that got him elected. He also isn't going to be the GOP's choice for 2008, so I say no way in hell.

If Bush has half a brain, he will choose a young up and coming party hotshot to be a running mate in '04. Condi Rice or Rudy Guliani come to mind. Powell wouldn't accept the nod and McCain is too old to be a viable candidate in '08. Because lets face it 2008 is Hillary's year and the only person in the GOP able to curb-stomp Hillary Clinton is KING RUDY I, GOD-EMPEROR OF NEW YORK.

Hmm...interesting, but what makes you think that Guliani would want such a position? Further, despite his popularity, he doesn't exactly have the background necessary to make a legitamate candidate.Col. As for Rice, do you really think it would be wise to piss off all the racist right-wingers who voted for Bush in the first place by appointing her as the heir to the Bush legacy?

if the only other option in 2008 is Hillary Clinton then yes. You will see the South vote for a black President and hell (aka Alabama) will freeze over shortly thereafter. The Kernel wrote:Hmm...interesting, but what makes you think that Guliani would want such a position? That's why I think they should have gone with McCain last time. The hard core righ-wingers sure weren't going to vote for Gore and McCain would have pulled more votes from the center than Bush likely did.Joe wrote:What are they gonna do? The Republican party has been screwing themselves for awhile catering to the fringe (IMO) right of the party just like the Democrats were killing themselves catering to the left before Bill Clinton. I think Dole could have defeated Clinton if he hadn't cow-towed to the right wing parts of the party platform. He would have been better just being himself.

catering to the fringe? Have you seen Bush's spending plan? Jesus, social spending has increased more under Bush then Clinton and Carter combined. I'm telling you, we voted for an economic conservative and got LBJ with twice the Jesus. ugghhhh. But whats the alternative? higher taxes and even more spending under a Democrat? pah!Tsyroc wrote:That's why I think they should have gone with McCain last time. On social issues yeah, I guess they're catering to the fringe. On domestic issues (with the exception of those tax cuts) I don't get why the Democrats hate Bush so much, I mean he's been implementing all their spending increases for months.

The same way the Republicans hated Clinton even though he was essentially co-opting any Republican issue that came up during his adminstration. Its simple party politics.Joe wrote:On social issues yeah, I guess they're catering to the fringe.
