It seems to have been overshadowed by the curriculum changes, but the Georgia Senate is debating a resolution that could ultimately forbid gay marriage. It is still in the preliminary stage of course, it has to get passed by super majorities in both houses and then go to referendum, but there is a good chance that this November voters will get the chance to amend the State Constitution to define marriage as exclusively heterosexual.
I'm about ready to move to Canada. If only they would take the final step and renounce the monarchy.

It's a stupid fucking redundancy. We've already got shit on the books that says gays can't get married, but that's not enough for some people. This is just a slap in the face to homosexuals.

I don't think fundementalists will ever really defeat gay rights. A significant segment of the population will always be gay, bi, or lesbian. A victory for the fundies will always be challenged by GBL groups and their sympathizers, whereas a significant triumph for gay rights will basically become unassailable.

Canada become a Republic?? Sounds like an evil plot by those damned Frenchies to me.Johonebesus wrote: I'm about ready to move to Canada. If only they would take the final step and renounce the monarchy.
Silent majority type of thing, I suppose. Most people are probably against it, have been against it for years, but never really have cared enough to make it into a huge issue (also keep in mind that it already is illegal, albeit not enshrined in the Constitution). It's just accepted down here that gays don't marry. If gay marriage hadn't emerged as such a hot button national issue within the last year or so we wouldn't be hearing anything about it, I guarantee you. Our wonderful state politicians have probably just decided to jump on the anti-gay wave that's been sweeping the country to get votes, coddle the fundies and whatnot. I doubt it's going to be as heated of an issue as that whole escapade with those idiots and their goddamned racist flag, but expect the worst to happen. I love the state but we have more than our fair share of retrograde thinkers here. Things will get better eventually, as the dinosaurs start to die off, but I wouldn't expect this to happen anytime soon. The Kernel wrote:Joe I'm curious, what is your impression of the popular opinion on this issue in Georgia? Is it just a small minority making noise or does a large percentage of the population there seriously care about gay marriage?

Interesting, from what I've heard, they'd apply for Statehood soon after...Montcalm wrote:If there`s ever a Republic in Canada,it will be when Quebec separate from the rest of the country.TheDarkling wrote:Canada become a Republic??
