Post by Stuart Mackey »

My 1972 Hillman Hunter had a heart attack today.
I think its the starter motor, battery is ok, smell of melted plastic/burnt wiring and no joy when turning the key.

Installing a new starter in one of those should be a breeze with all the room under the hood to work with. A rebuilt starter shouldn't be that expensive either (<£30 from a quick search)

True enough, its just that with old cars things keep breaking. It would be nice to go for six months without having to shell out on repairs, however small.

*Cringes at memories of replacing starters...*

I learned the hard way where to get starters for my cars: junk yard or dealer as the rebuilds are not worth shit unless you do them yourself.

See if you can get a starter form the junker. It might be cheaper and last longer than a rebuild. That from my experience.

I did that once and ended up with another working 300zx. Then I found out I had a defective rebuild starter from the local pep boyz. Yeah, I get in those moods too...

It used to be my grandads, and its older than I am {I am a 1975 model, aint I just luvly?nice lines..low milage as well}
One thing I have learned in working in one of the largest Fire museums in the world, is that old vehicles break often, no matter how well you maintain them, due to wear. There is no avoiding it, sooner or later the costs just become uneconomic.

Avoid a french or italian car. French and italian made cars have the most breakdowns coompared to cars made by other countries. Japanese made one should be the most reliable.

In short I will be buying a Toyota {watch for headlines from NZ that read "Man dies of boardom at the wheel"}

Actually, no. The second one I bought was in better condition. At least the T-tops didn't leak.
