And if you actually read the whole article:

Mercier admitted that it was "absurd to receive this apology from a person so low in the media hierarchy. You really ought to be getting it from the editors and reporters at the agenda-setting publications, such as The New York Times and The Washington Post."

I'd take it more as a commentary on the utter lack of responsibility the big media feel to the public. I would say it's attention that needs to be whored.

after all I think there's an old joke about what the differance between a reporter and a prostitue is. One's an honored member of the Oldest profession, and the other just gossips about who she's boinking.
