Hey all,

I need some help. Someone on another forum is claiming he's a voter, despite the fact he has made previous allusions to not being a U.S. citizen. When called on it, he claimed he got his citizenship because his dad (not a natural-born U.S. citizen) works for the U.S. Government (which sounds dubious in and of itself) and thus citizenship was granted on the kid. Now this reeks of BS to me, but I don't know for sure.

Facts the poster claims:

- born in Spain and still has citizenship there
- lived in Argentina for a long time, where his dad supposedly worked for the government
- moved to California recently to go to school (and claims his dad now works for the U.S. government, conventiently enough).
- has complained about non-natural born citizens being unable to run for president, as he wants to do so (*snicker*)

So can a foreign national be granted U.S. citizenship without going through the naturalization process? If his dad got his citizenship, would it be conferred instantly on the kids? Help.

Citizenship can only be gained one of three ways:

1. Being born to a parent citizen.
2. Being born in America.
3. Naturalization.

Working for the government doesn't make you a citizen, and you are only a citizen when you are born to a parent already a citizen. So nope, he ain't a citizen...

Now he says that his dad was born in Hartford, CT so is there for a natural-born citizen, but his mom was a foreign national who became naturalized.

Now, wouldn't this STILL make him a natural-born citizen, as his father was one and had lived at least 5 years in the U.S.?

That depends on how long his dad was out of the country when he was born, and whether or not his dad resided in American embassies.
