10.5 TV Movie

Post by Montcalm »

I'm watching this tv movie cause i like these huge catastrophic stories, and it begins with an earthquake hitting Seattle most building is getting heavy damage while this guy is avoiding everything thats falling around him until (i'm not sure if he escaped the last thing that fell) the Seattle Space Needle fell down, and now there was another quake which the ground was opening up behind a speeding train and "POOF" train fell the the crack.

My opinion before this movie end is i think its another Hollywood Wankfest :P

I didn't see it, as I was switching between the new episode of The Simpsons that aired tonight (The "Promiscous Idiot Island" bit at the beginning was hilarious) and the Blue Collar Comedy Tour on Comedy Central, but I believe that they admitted that they got their research off of the first page on the Internet they could find on it. I guess the 10.5 refers to the average IQ of the people who wrote it.

Isn't this the one that was recently discussed in SLAM, where they fuse a faultline together with nuke-yoo-lar bombs? :D

I'm taping both parts, i like it a lot. It's very exciting, with poor science, but who cares about science it's entertainment :)

IIRC, isn't 10 the highest the Richter scale goes? And isn't one of those babies supposed to be "felt around the world" or something? And yet, from this preview I saw, the President had to be told about it? Unless he just felt a rumble and discounted it, one would think he'd figure it out.

But then, I didn't see it. I'm just wondering about that one part.

Just wait until CaptainChewbacca sees this thread...

At any rate, 10.5 is a crock of shit. NBC did not even bother to consult *any* geologists while they were making the movie.

I wish this movie could be MSTed.

The commercials for 10.5 made me cringe. Who is the target audience for this movie? I don't think anyone in California watched it.

I don't think they use the Richter scale anymore. And the quake the President had to be told about was a smaller one in Seattle. I think the "10.5" is tomorrow in Los Angeles.

Which is fine with me - smoldering rubble still constitutes better architecture than the drek I have to hurt my eyes with every day.

No, but they did consult geological websites. :P

A press-release was sent out last week that said it was a movie, and that no real-science was involved.

You know, I really enjoyed the popcorn factor of this movie, that is until they wanted to use nukes to "create enough heat to fuse the fault line". Uh didn't Lex Luthor use nukes to cause the Big One until that no good Superman guy traveled back in time to stop it? I live in San Diego and while watching this movie all it reminded me to do is buy some spare batteries for my Maglite.

Tell NBC just how crappy the movie was:

there is a pull down menu.... click movies and specials, and it will open your default e-mail program.

Yes, I watched it....and constantly made fun of it the whole time with a heavy scottish accent. :D Seriously, how could you NOT make fun of this movie? I was all I could do to keep from rolling when that train got swallowed up by that trench....which conveniently stopped after it gobbled up the train. :D I was making references to Tremors and MIB 2 when that trench was chasing that train.

My letter tp NBC, and it's all true....well except maybe the friends and fraiser thing, I never liked Fraiser, and only like the first 4 seasons of friends.

"How could you make sure a horrifyingly bad movie? This movie coming from the network that made great hits like Friends and Frasier. This movie is so offensivly bad, I'd be surprised if geoligists didn't up and keel from watching your crap fest of a movie.

This movie is worthy of being on Mystery Science Thearter 3000. If is that horrible. Really, you people paid money to a group of people who's research was looking at the first page on the internet they could find? Unghh...

Congratulations on the stupification and demise of common sense in western culture

[spinal tap]It goes to 11[/spinal tap] Seriously, 9.2 is the highest ever recorded, but there's no limit, its a logarithmic scale with each interger representing an order of magnitude. A 10.5 earthquake would release 5 TRILLION tons of energy. Oh, and Metrion Cascade, we still use the Richter scale.

NBC makes good sticoms, but bad science. Atomic Train anyone? A few little things:

1. Earthquakes don't amplify. The stress can shift down a fault, but they don't resonate or any crap like that.

2. They don't "ramp up" either like in the movie. "7... 7.2 ... 8... 8.4..." seriously, I thought California was trying to go to warp. A quake happens, you wait ten minutes, call Berkley and UCLA, and they tell you what it was.

3. No geologists are that good looking.

4. Earthquakes aren't mean. They don't chase trains for 45 seconds FOLLOWING TRACK CURVES until they swallow the train and then stop.

5. NBC can't do science.

Anyone have questions?
