Grid Iron question.

Post by Gandalf »

I've recently rented Madden 2002, I've been going ok at it. My team; The Orthanc Istari are undefeated. Yet there is a problem. I have very little comprehension of the game.

Does anyone know what "1st and 10" means? And all the offshoot terms of such.

1st means the first down.
10 is the amount of yards you need to complete to stay in 1st down or if not go into second down.

Here's to hoping that you're kidding. But if you arent...

1st and 10 means that it is first down with 10 yards to go until your next first down. You move the ball forward 10 yards, you go back to first again. If you fail to move the ball 10 yards after 4 downs, the other team gets the ball. A down is a play... so pretty much your goal is to get 10 yards every 4 plays and to stop the other team from moving 10 yards in 4 plays.

When the down gets to 4th and X, you should punt or make a field goal. That is usually smartest because that will get you points (for a field goal) or place the team farther down the field when they start with the ball (for a punt). You can go for it on 4th and X, but should you fail to convert (get another first down), the other team will get the ball where you were last downed.

Those are the basics.

Thanks, in fact I was not kidding.

One last question, when it says "X and goal/inches" what does goal/inches mean?

X and goal means that you started within 10 yards of the endzone... so your goal is not to get the first down. There are no more first downs to be gotten... you are going for the goal!

X and inches means that there is less than 1 yard left to go, so saying X and 1 would just be wrong. In those situations it is best to go for a run play right up the middle. You will usually make it in those situations.

no prob. If you need any help with other terminology (What is a "screen pass" anyway?), just ask. But that is a little further down the line for you. Enjoy your Madden!
