They're usually referred to as STGODs, IIRC (I just hate saying that)

How does one of those work exactly? I mean if I understand the concept, someone writes a story set in a mutually agreed upon universe and between several authors. What's to prevent one upmanship and general nastiness?

Well, here's the best description I can manage:

Basically in most SD's, different people take control of different factions in a universe. factions can be governments or just people. Then they take these people and play against or with each other in story format. For example, one guy writes a segment, then another adds to that with his own segment. Thus, everyone contributes to the story.

However, there are some SD's that are TRULY complete stories, with full characters, and full plot.

Eventually my story arc will be merged with Slayen and Isil'Zha's into one story.
