Several questions about Firefox

Post by PainRack »

1. How do I download a language pack for Traditional Mandarin and Simplified Mandarin?

2. How do I use java applications with it? I'm involved in an online course, but Firefox can't bring up that page at all.

For 2, you have to copy a DLL file over to the plugins directory. Don't know the name.

Painrack probably means a language pack in terms of changing the interface language, not in terms of display in the browser window. Getting non-Latin support at all is always annoying already, but getting the program itself localized is a bigger pain. The Thai language pack, for instance, hasn't been updated since Milestone 14.

As for getting Traditional Chinese, a localized build seems to be required. That can be gotten from the Firefox download page under "localized builds." For Simplified, this site might be of some use, but I can't read Chinese so can't really tell what's on this page. This link leads to a list of all Mozilla localization projects running, along with links. Installation and configuration instructions for a given pack are usually included on the page of the pack's creator. As 0.9 is just out, most of the packs aren't updated for it yet.

On the issue of Java, you simply have to install Sun's Java plugin, found here. Firefox doesn't come with its own Java implementation, but it can hook into Sun's (which, incidently, is more stable than the MS Virtual Machine that comes with IE).

EDIT: I'm pretty sure I misread Dalton's post as sarcasm when it wasn't. I apologize, and the line's been expunged.

Thanks for all the help.... but here's another one.

Anyone knows of a chinese language programme that can work with Firefox? I'm trying to search for something chinese online, but the chinese interface I use can't type words into Firefox.

And also, I can't install that localised build for some obscure reason.

Sun's java works really, really well. Naturally, since they invented it. Also, if you're using XP (and I think 2k as well), you have to install a third party java plug-in, due to one of Microsofts lawsuit settlements with Sun. Newer version s of Windows don't come with Java VM at all.

That, and Sun's Java plug-in is universal - it will work if you're using IE, Mozilla, Netscape, Firefox, etc.
