Having recently got a rather nice new compiter and putting XP Pro on it, its gone down the shitter after 2 days .
Any attempt to do open/view anything by Symantec results in the program being shut down automatically. When I go through the task list, shutting down one of the svchost.exe (in System) causes the machine to go into a 1min shutdown like MSblaster did. XP is fully updated to within 2 days ago, but Norton won't work.
Any Help?

1. what type of computer do you have? (specs. 'nice new' means nothing)
2. What version of symantec is it? It may not be compatible with Windows XP or may need driver updates.

www.grisoft.com AVG Antivirus. Symantec SUCKS, and Norton's worse!
Shutting down svchost.exe is a Bad Idea unless you like the 1minute-to-Reboot crap. Leave it alone; it's harmless and normal.

SVChost is a standard windows system file. Yes, it's normal to see multiple copies of it in the task managed, it has to do with how XP divides various services up between runs of the SCVHOST.EXE prog. Now, if you see one that's taking up a lot of CPU time, that likely means you have a virus. As for AVG...I'm no fan of Norton, but every time I've seen a customer bring in a system with AVG on it, I've had to kick in the nuts, remove it, and put a /working/ antivirus program on to get it to detect viruses. Draw your own conclusions.
Norton has its good points, but it's horridly coded. McAfee, out of the other big-name AV companies, tends to detect a LOT more, but has a really shittily bad update system, very obtuse and unintuitive. Personally I use eTrust, by Computer Associates, seems to do fairly well by me. On the flip side, I'm not a raving idiot like many of my customers at work, so I don't pile on the viruses like there's no tomorrow. Found almost fourteen THOUSAND infected files on one system the other day...
EDIT: By that last comment I mean that I don't give my antivirus a real stress-test, so I can't say for sure how good it is.

Its 2003 version, works on XP Home on another machine. Reinstalling it did no good, it still shuts down after about 20 seconds of running, as does norton firewall, AVG, and just about everything else (adaware, hijackthis,SBs&D) except from MS office, IE, winamp and firebird.2. What version of symantec is it? It may not be compatible with Windows XP or may need driver updates.
I've tried updating Norton but it simply shuts down, and any internet connection I get stays connected, but won't recieve or send information.
