political party conventions: useless??

The DNC and GOP conventions are right around the corner. However, for all intents and purposes, months ahead of time. Rrunning mates were announced weeks beforehand. Security concerns have driven costs through the roof and, as is the case in Boston tremendous disruption of day-to-day life. Now the major networks have announced that they will only be giving the conventions about an hour of coverage per night.

My question is this: is there even a point to it anymore? What new information could we possibly glean from watching hours of CNN listening to John McCain wax poetic about how brilliant George Bush is? Do we really care to hear Ted Kennedy ramble on about how important it is to give the government back to the people, and John Kerry is the man to do it? Will you watch any of this crap?

It has long since turned into a dog and pony show. A chance for the all but crowned heir to preen and preach. Its the political version of the Oscars. Totally useless.
