Gaming Movies

A while back in one of my art classes, a aspiring film student and myself got to talking about video games and I mentioned how I would like to see or even make (wank wank) certain games into movies. This is what transpired. i listed my three top choices (which I'm sure will be the majorities) and how I would do them. Not so much as story wise, but media wise.

Super Mario Brothers.
Oh hell yeah. What? There was already a what? Fuck you smokin'? Can I get some? This movie is Super Mario Brothers. It tells the tale of two Italian plumbers Mario Mario and his brother Luigi Mario trying to rescue the princess Toadstool from the evil clutches of Bowser, King of the Koopas. We all know how this goes. In fact it would probably follow loosely and take heavily from the first game. A second film would ensue opening up with creatures from dream world being recruited. What's so great about this he asked? How would I do it, he was so intrigued.

Claymation

Hell yeah. I cannot stress how important it is to keep that cartooney Mario look going and claymation is about the only damn way to do it I can see. Although I'm sure CG can be made to mimic well enough. The world may never know.

Sonic The Hedgehog
16bit wars. I fought on the side of Sega bitches. Get some! Sonic the Hedgehog is the story of a blue rodent with sonic speed trying to free his animal friends from the industrial might of the evil Dr. Robotnik. In this match up Sonic travles to different lands to reach the chaos emeralds before Robotniks animal powered robots can snag them. How would I do this one? Easy

CG baby, all the fucking way.

Just like Sonic Adventures opening and closing FMVs full CGI is the only way to capture Sonics hyper screen blurring speed in a perfect crisp environment rife with mechanical moving images.

Last but not least, yet probably not as creative as the previous two is my third main choice. I mean, you can only make so many video game movies.

The Legend of Zelda
I smell trilogy here folks. The other two can live and die on one movie and have sequels if the money and the need is right. This here though, just has far too much to encompass that I'm still not sure how I'd go about it. At first it was like, a movie about the first one or something and a second one with parts of the other games. One thing is for sure, Either a duology covering Ocarina of Time being named Hero of Time so as to attract more people, (It was a great name in 1998 when it came out, now, it needs to say Hero of Time) where Link has his youth in the first movie then his adulthood in the second. Or we have something with the first two covering material from them all with the third movie being about Wind Waker. Yeah. Wind Waker, so fucking deal with it you cel shading basher bastards. So how does this one get pulled off?

Real Life actors. No animation to it. It's real life.

It was tricky too, because I could see Orlando Bloom but that choice is right out for obvious reasons. It would end up being a major production though, the only way to give justice to this game. The only way.

Other games include
Ecco the Dolphin (though I'm sure Flipper is dead)
Mega Man
Kirby
Spy Hunter
Metroid
Colony Wars

I thought they were making a Spy Hunter movie? :?

I like the idea of a Zelda movie(s).

Alex Kidd in Miracle World.

A you kid who can break rocks with his punching goes out to rescue his brother. And since it debuted in 8-bit, anything could look good.

I just looked up Alex Kidd. I never had a master system nor do I know the games on it. So I googled and found plenty of sites on it.

One day while traveling back to his spirtual homeland, Alex Kidd master of the block crushing punch 'shellcore', meets an old man badly hurt. The old man tells Alex of the attack on the city where his brother resides over. As the old man is dying he hands Alex Kidd a map and a necklace with a gem known as sun stone. Thus his adventure begins.

This one is cartoon animation all the way.

Hands down, or is that paper, or is it stone, or is it scissors?!? Gah!!! Yeah, we could make a movie of this, and it would fucking rule you asshats! Pay the admission price and sit down.

Baldur's Gate Trilogy, without a doubt.

Think about it- by the time it's up to Throne of Bhaal, it's in *full-on* Highlander mode .................

I would wet myself if they made a movie out of the Marathon trilogy, or even Halo. A Final Fantasy VI, VII or VIII movie would be killer, as well.

Oh, come off it. A real-actor Zelda movie would be cheesier than a whole bucket of cheese.

Final Fantasy VII, eh? Like this one?.

Metroid's been optioned, too, by John Woo of all people, but that doesn't mean anything.

Edit: So has Halo and Doom, apparently. Doesn't mean they'll be movies, merely that the rights are sold.

I was just replaying Zelda: TWW yesterday, and I can really see the movie potential. Some of the cutscenes are more movielike than some movies, complete with music, storyline, etc...for example, the first time you meet Ganondorf and the dragon torches him...:)

I would pay actual money for a Ninja Gaiden movie.

Massive budget, the best special effects money could buy, and Ryuhei Kitamura directing it.

You know it makes sense.

Bull shit! The Legend of Zelda would not be cheesey. You just have to do it right! A kid who never talks and just nods. Everyone would scrath thier head at first, but they'd catch on. You'd have to do it right, but I've had ideas for it for years and it's actually not that hard to keep it solid.

Ninja Gaiden would be an interesting ass movie no doubt. Matrix style visuals though.

Spy Hunter with the Rock. That's more fucked then a 2 cent whore in a saturday night las vegas gang bang with mike tyson, ike turner and a member of the kennedy family. The whole point of Spy Hunter was the car. If you have a big name star, it will be about the star, and not even the character he plays. I love the Rock but this is one no go on my traffic signal.

The Quake series would be good. Of course I and II would be based on thier video game counterparts and easy to fit into a 2 hour movie time span. While three would be the hell on wheels using a few characters from both plus the add ins you have.

All I ask is that they not make one of those movies and make it childish. Silly? Humorous? Sure. But you can be silly and humorous on a more than ten year old's level, which I doubt a lot of directors would do for a movie based on a game like Super Mario Bros or Kirby. The tendency would be to water it down to a dumb kid's level, cheapening the product. Anybody ever heard the orchestrated version of the Kirby Super Star theme? It's so dramatic that I couldn't stop laughing the first time I heard it. But how many script writers and directors would understand that something weird would be even funnier if it was done with a straight face?

That being said, I wonder how a Tetris movie could be pulled off...

When I look at the anime television show based on kids battling it out with those spin-tops (forgot the name), oh yeah, blademasters, I am sure they can pull off a Tetris movie.

What about a movie based off of Sim City 4, where a bunch of department-junkies argue, and eventually make each other crazy, by constantly making annoying suggestions to the mayor. The cast for a Sim City 4 movie could be astounding. They can't forget to add the alien abductions, and the classic llamas somewhere in the film.

As if there's anything wrong with that?

Personally, I'd love to see a movie based upon one of the GTA games.

(incidentally, there was once a car chase action flick called "Grand Theft Auto" made back in the 1970s - I think, but the games have little or no connection to that film except for the fact that a lot of cars get stolen, smashed and involved in car chases)

Oh, and the Resident Evil movie(s) have been a wasted opportunity as far as I know. I've never seen them, but the reviews all indicate that the people behind the RE movies barely were aware of the games they were based upon.

I would watch that in a heatbeat, and if I was feeling particularly cruel that day, I might make someone else watch it with me.

Wing Commander was good the first time I saw it in theaters. However ever since then it's sucked ass. In fact, I've never played the games and I still know it's a disgrace to the series. That one needs a redo

Resident Evil. I never liked the games to begin with. However, I loved that first movie and sure hope this new one is good.

Super Mario Bros. and Kirby, I'd do in a heartbeat and it would not be kiddyfied. Your right, You can do it without being kiddy and dumbed down and still keep a PG rating. They wouldn't cus, and people wouldn't get chopped up with gibs and gore all over the place so it would keep it's PG rating. Hell, Star Wars is PG for crying out loud!!!

Too bad they're oversaturated the soundtrack with the genre Bart Simpson refers to as "crud-rock".

However, the new one features a villain which resembles an undead yeti with a rocket launcher. Pit said undead yeti against a katana-wielding, genetically enhanced Milla Jovovich and we have what Nathan Shumate would call a super-high concept.

Always look at the bright side of life.

What about Starfox? That could have some potential.
