1. Let me see, I downloaded several archives files, and I forgotten the password. Is there anything I can do to crack those files? They're in rar format.
2. My computer has been acting a tad strange, as several media and Java files I used to play are now no longer functional, it says that its missing certain files. What gives?

for number 1) good luck
for number 2)Have you looked in their folders to see if they have gone? If they are still there try oening them. Elsewise there is a good chance something corrupted them beyond recognition. I hate it when it happens (happened to one of my favorite video files) but from there I can't help you.

As far as I know, the only crackers for popular archives like .zip and .rar are brute-force. There's no 'trick' around them like with old Windows or Office passwords. If the password is something difficult, you're generally screwed.

Ah, but there IS a trick other than brute force. I only know a program that does it for Zips: basically, if you have a small file from the archive (uncompressed) you can use this program to derive a valid password (it won't be the original password but will work anyway). It's something like Advanced Archive Extractor or somesuch and it was made by that russian dude that the FBI held for like a year for cracking stuff
Don't know if it works on RARs , tho.

I found it:

I don't know if it's worth paying for (I think the trial is limited somehow), it's up to you. It'd be good to make sure you have a sample file first.

Please don't scare me. They're 600MB worth, and I hate the thought of waiting 4 hours for them to be downloaded to be futile.

Oh, I know that this program works perfectly. But it only works if, for instance, you have a small file like "readme.txt" both uncompressed outside and ENCRYPTED inside the archive. The program compares the two and creates a code that works for every file that's compressed with the same password.
I haven't paid for it, I obtained the serial thru other means, but I'm not about to suggest you do the same in a public forum
