Republicans: We tend to forget 9/11
We have Bob Dole and several other prominent Republicans within the last fucking hour say the same thing. "Americans tend to forget 9/11. They need to be reminded of the sacrifices that need to be made and what we suffered, blah blah blah."
I find this insulting and more than a little disgusting in that they are dwelling on this nationla tragedy as if it is a mantra that will make the bad things go away.
Yes, we remember 9/11 especially here in NYC. But I'm glad Bob Dole is here to remind us. Reminds me of the Doonesbury Cartoon where Bush's Press sercretary announces that from now on, any question dealing with foreign policy, the economy and domestic policy will gave the same answer "9/11"

Sickening. Would the apologists who leapt forward saying 'That's not why they're there!' in the previous threads on the placement of the RNC like to recant?

Perhaps you didn't wacth the DNC. They have said 9/11 in the first two hours more than I think it was mentioned in the entire Democratic convention. There were quite a few people including yourself who expressed disbelief that the Republicans have come vulturing to NYC over 9/11.Stormbringer wrote:They're whoring September 11th for all it's worth, jeez what a suprise.

The Republicans have more to tout there, of course they're going to spend more time on it. It's one of Bush's few good moments, which of course he's since squandered. It's crass as hell, but why are people suprised.Stravo wrote:Perhaps you didn't wacth the DNC. Kerry was a bit more oblique in his speech but he's stumped a lot on September 11th himself. It's just he's got a lot less to tout and he knows enough to keep the second guessing to safer platforms.

Of course. Bush is all about thinking happy thoughts. The problem Numbnuts has is that people really do remember 9/11. They remember Bush sitting in the classroom with his thumb up his ass and that blank stare you get from a dumb dog when you pretend to throw a ball. They remember Bush tucking his tail between his legs and hiding in a bunker on that day.
If anyone has a vested interest in forgetting what happened September 11, 2001 it's Dubya. Or he will tell a number of big fish tales (aided by his supporters and the media) and try to put forward a Bizarro World version of events where he was a hero. On the Today Show, he even claimed that if his National Guard unit had been called up, he would have gone to Vietnam. That's some awfully big talk from a deserter who was too much of a coward to attend weekend drill in Alabama.
Of course all carnivores scavenge. Maybe I should apologize to the animals since jackals and vultures eat the dead because it's a meal. And of course, John Kerry, your candidate, who openly admitted that there was a fairly long period after the attack when he "couldn't think", somehow escapes all condemnation by you - even though he "sat around with his thumb up his ass" at least as long. This is ludicrous. By this same logic, Eisenhower and MacArthur - hell, why stop there? - FDR, should have been on the front lines during WWII, rifle in hand. The way you make it sound, Dubya had it built just so he could cower there in case anything went wrong. Yes, the commander in chief's job is to show the country how brave he is by personally facing down danger.Elfdart wrote:They remember Bush tucking his tail between his legs and hiding in a bunker on that day.
Why do you think we have a bunker for top leaders. And just how new do you think it is? Why do you think we have a secret service detail to protect the president, instead of requiring him to heroically fight off any would be assassins himself? Because it is STUPID to decapitate your organization by recklessly exposing your commander in chief to danger. It is his job to lead the country, not to be on the front lines. NO overall commander is supposed to be at the front. That might have been how they did things in Alexander the Great's day, but we have learned since then that the cost of having your command decapitated outweighs whatever morale boost you get from having the troops see him at the front. That's the reality.
Why the fuck do you think that is so incredible? What, exactly do you think people in the National Guard do when their units are called up? Gee... they go out on their deployments, that's what.Elfdart wrote:If anyone has a vested interest in forgetting what happened September 11, 2001 it's Dubya. Grow the fuck up. This kind of crap is so dishonest it makes my blood boil. As a veteran, I can tell you that there may be many reasons one might seek to duck out of a training exercise. But since there is less danger of being killed in one than there is of being involved in an accident on the interstate, cowardice is not one. Training accidents do happen, but they are less common than auto fatalities. NO ONE seriously envisions his own death in a training exercise you ignorant little twerp, any more than you pause to think that you might be killed every single time you hop in the car to make a trip to the nearest 7-11. I can say this, having been on more than a few of these exercises myself.Elfdart wrote:That's some awfully big talk from a deserter who was too much of a coward to attend weekend drill in Alabama.

Funny, when Bush ran for the bunker, the planes had already crashed. Besides, Dubya was in Florida, not New York or Washington so he was in no danger from being bombed. Giuliani had the testicular fortitude to not run and hide. Did Clinton run and hide after Oklahoma City? No. Did he hide after the numerous death threats against him and at least three known assassination attempts? No. Did Clinton, who ducked Vietnam go prancing around on the deck of a carrier in a flight suit? No. Bush is a cowardly, yapping little terrier who acts like a ferocious pit bull -from behind the safety of a chain link fence.

Irrelevant. If that reaction was a liability in Bush, it would also be a liability in Kerry. Now Kerry wants to be president, and you want himto be also. We have Kerry's own admission that he sat stupefied by events no less than Bush did. So we know that he is apparently no more instantly decisive in the face of an unfolding catastrophe than Bush is. Yet in your mind this is a reason why Bush is a bad leader while Kerry is excused.Elfdart wrote:Who was President that day? Easy to say, but since his location was public knowledge, its entirely understandable that the secret service immediately wanted to remove him to a secure location. You see, the funny thing is, that's standard operating procedure in the event of attack, and it's a procedure that goes back way before the Bush administration.Elfdart wrote:Besides, Dubya was in Florida, not New York or Washington so he was in no danger from being bombed.
Giuliani is not the president, and does not have the responsibilities of the president, not the protective detail the president has.Elfdart wrote:Giuliani had the testicular fortitude to not run and hide.
Newsflash! The Oklahoma City bombing was a single event, half a continent away from where Clinton was. Clinton certainly never perceived his life to be in any danger, nor did his secret service detail. The 9/11 did attacks did target White House, apparently. The situation is just a little different.Elfdart wrote:Did Clinton run and hide after Oklahoma City? No.
Here's another newsflash, other presidents get death threats as well, including Geo. W. Bush. Yet he still makes public appearances, which indicates that he is not, in fact, hiding from these, any more than Clinton did. Try again.Elfdart wrote:Did he hide after the numerous death threats against him and at least three known assassination attempts? No.
What the fuck does that have to do with it? How does this, in any way, show cowardice?Elfdart wrote:Did Clinton, who ducked Vietnam go prancing around on the deck of a carrier in a flight suit? No.
And you are a stupid, querulous little whiner who has no understanding whatever of the responsibilities that obtain at the top of the chain of command, so you equate following standard, long-established security procedures in the event of an attack known to be aimed at this country's political leadership with cowardice.Elfdart wrote:Bush is a cowardly, yapping little terrier who acts like a ferocious pit bull -from behind the safety of a chain link fence.
Which proves nothing as regards cowardice. Since his unit was not deployed and was not scheduled to be deployed, being absent from it was not a way of avoiding potential Vietnam service. He left his unit in Texas because he wanted to go work for Bush family friend Winton Blount, who was running for the U.S. Senate in Alabama. Then after going there, he eventually decided to go to Harvard business school in the fall of 1973, so he requested and got an honorable discharge 8 months before his service was scheduled to end.Elfdart wrote:Bush went AWOL for over a year.Perinquus wrote:Why the fuck do you think that is so incredible? Is he guilty of using his dad's influence in congress to get into the Air National Guard? Yes. Is he guilty of shirking his duties in a non-combat post? Yes. Is this evidence that he would have refused to go or fled to Canada or something had his unit been called up? No. Especially since even his father's influence as a congressman couldn't have saved him from the dire consequences of actual desertion and draft dodging. Here's the assessment of a source that is certainly not a republican propaganda or Bush apologist site:
The Straight Dope
Bush's enemies say all this proves he was a cowardly deserter. Nonsense. He was a pampered rich kid who took advantage. Why wasn't he called on it in a serious way during the 2000 election? Probably because Democrats figured they'd get Clinton's draft-dodging thing thrown back at them. Not that it matters. If history judges Bush harshly--and it probably will--it won't be for screwing up as a young smart aleck, but for getting us into this damn fool war.
So you conclude it can only be cowardice? Nonsense. That duty assignment was one that did not entail combat duties, and thus carried negligible danger. So what's to be afraid of? Bush most probably ducked out because he was a spoiled little rich kid who found the duties of his Air Nat'l Guard post interfered with is having fun, and doing what he'd rather be doing, working for his father's friend's campaign, and ultimately pursuing his career plans in business school. Their's plenty of reason to accuse him of selfishness and irresponsibility about this, but not cowardice.Elfdart wrote:Then why didn't Bush show up? There won't be anything to keep you from the distant morning glow.
I'm not a man. I just portrayed one for 15 years.

Bush was told that a plane crashed into the WTC. Not that it had been hijacked by terrorists or anything like that. As far as he knew, it was a horrible commuter accident. Not something that the President needs to jump up and immediately run to attent to. When they figured out that it wasn't just an accident, then Bush got to the bunker ASAP. Like he should have, in order to protect him till the immediate threat was gone.

His Chief of Staff in a Larry King interview last night said that what he told Bush was this: "A second plane has crashed into the WTC. America is under attack."
Bush proceeded to read about Billy the Goat.

Conceded, if that is indeed true. I tend to aviod things that depress me, and the news is one of them.
