The russians, as much as I love them, I just have this horrible feeling that if they deploy they will suffer great losses and many things will go wrong, the worst would be, americans saving them in a hotspot.

Although Putin probably could survive the sending of troops to Iraq despite wide Russian opposition, his party would probably suffer greatly in elections.

Also, I'm curious: there seems to be a lack of communication between Putin and his own military PR department.

I think it would be too risky politically for putin

Imagine he sends 40,000 troops,

the troops arrive with poor equipment, not high end top knotch stuff, but the old shit that they always keep around.

So they arrive with that, they are sent into Fallujah, and something kicks up, there is a firefight, and things progress, all of a sudden,

TA DA! to the rescue come the americans,
now its all over cnn for 3 weeks straight,

can you imagine the backfire putin would get?
and that is a very real possibility

The Russians have a lot more experience than the US fighting terrorists/insurgents. The problem is that they might employ the same methods they are used to, only that covering them up will be harder. Still I'm sure they are quite capable of holding their own without the US needing to rescue them.

What if Al-Qaeda used a nuclear bomb? What if Grays intervene on the insurgents' side? Got any proof for that kind of supposition?

If Russia does deploy 40.000 troops to Iraq it's the Iraqi civilian casualties I'll worry about, not those sustained by the Russians.

While I'd welcome the manpower the Russians might put on the ground in Iraq, the bad PR might be worse than it's worth.

After all, it's going to be a huge blow to American efforts to argue that the war is not, in fact, against Muslims as a whole when a supremely vengeful Russia arrives looking for blood.

Not to mention we're trying to make Iraq into a relatively secular, humane democracy. The Russian way of dealing with terrorism may be incompatible with that goal.

Not going to happen. Like the article says, they're sticking to the earlier claims of not sending anything. It would also mean massive escalation of the insurgency, because the Russian army is a conscript one with poor training except for elite units and known for abuses. They'd go medieval on the population like they have in Chechnya, and that would just tear everything wide open. As for the suggestion in the article about Russian troops in Afghanistan, what the fuck have they been smoking when they wrote that shit? Never happen, and they would get their throats cut at every turn. It's more or less 15 years when they just got out of there, and if they were to go back, everyone would be gunning for them like there's no tomorrow.

What color are the glasses you are wearing? Rose-tinted? As much propaganda as you were told in the 1980s, at least half of it was true. Ron Reagan was spot on with his Evil Empire comment, and yes, they really were that bad. I've lived next to Russia all my life and nothing but bad news comes from there most of the time.

Good people too, like fgalkin and my uncle's wife and some others I've met, but as a country, the place is so fucked up it's hard to believe. And that's with ten years of improvement at that. Compare to what kind of progress the Balts have made in the meanwhile and the contrast couldn't be greater.
