What if Maul had elbowed Qui Gon in the face...

..instead of Obi-Wan?

Qui-gon plunges down and hangs on the ledge, getting behind in the fight, while Maul and Obi-Wan fight into the shield corridor, and finally the pit room.

Maul destroys Obi-Wan, and then almost kills Qui-Gon.. but leaves him hanging, gloating, until he jumps up, pulling Obi-Wans saber to him and giving Maul the splits.

Qui-Gon, rebellious as ever, still lives. He'll train anakin too. His own way.

Anakin is trained properly in the Force, doesn't give in to the Dark Side, doesn't become Darth Vader, and Lucas doesn't make eighteen septillion dollars.

I think you see why it happened the way it did.
