Man sets himself on fire outside of the White House

It's an alert on Fox News. It appears that he ldousd himself with gasoline and lit himself on fire.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — An unidentified man tried to set himself on fire outside the White House fence midday Monday, witnesses said.

Onlookers said the incident took place outside the Northwest gate. Uniformed Secret Service (search) agents were seen rushing to surround the man, who had graying hair and glasses. He was heard screaming in pain.

Television cameras captured the aftermath. Smoke hung in the air around the man as paramedics rushed to provide aid. The man appeared to be clutching his hand in pain, but it was unclear how serious his burns were.

A spokesman for the District of Columbia Fire Department (search) said the man suffered burns over about 30 percent of his body.

And speaking of the Buddist monks they at least clearly stated WHY exactly they were burning themselves to death then sat down in the flames and died

Theres no justification for this kind of self-abuse. He is obviously sick and needs help. This kind of protest wont change anybodys mind about anything, it will just have you chalked up as another loony.

If he lives, I hope he can get some help.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A man set himself afire Monday just outside a White House gate and repeatedly yelled "Allah Allah" after Secret Service (search) officers put out the flames and one held him facedown on the sidewalk.

Alan Etter, spokesman for the District of Columbia Fire and Emergency Medical Services, said guards at the gate quickly extinguished the flames, and the man had second and third-degree burns on about 30 percent of his body.

The man had burns to his head, back, arms and face but was conscious when medics took him to Washington Hospital Center, Etter said.

"I can confirm that there was an ignitable liquid present on the scene," Etter said.

White House doctors joined uniformed Secret Service personnel in administering first aid until the emergency service technicians arrived. They transported the 52-year-old man, who was not identified, to the burn unit of Washington Hospital Center.

Lorie Lewis, a Secret Service spokeswoman, said the man "set himself on fire on Pennsylvania Avenue on the north side of the White House complex." That section of Pennsylvania Avenue was recently reopened to pedestrians after being closed for security.

Saw this on my local news: 20 or so minutes ago someone scaled the fence to the White House grounds...was promptly caught and is detained..

Well now he gets to spend upwards of a month in a burn ward. And take it from me, the treatment for burns hurts a lot worse than actually being burned. In fact burns greater than 20% of your body you are at great risk to die from infection.

Although I have no sympathy for him.
