Glad to see these boats aren't gong to be laid up indefinately. I only hope there aren't any more major mishaps, not only because of concern for the safety of the crews, but also because one more Chicoutimi-sized accident would scuttle our sub program for good...The National Post wrote:Navy prepares submarines for relaunch
OTTAWA - Concerned about a growing backlog in training and the potential that shore-bound submariners might leave the navy, the Canadian military is pushing to get its underwater fleet back to sea early in the new year. Vice-Admiral Bruce MacLean, the head of the navy, ordered the country's three submarines dockside on Oct. 12 as a precaution after a fire broke out on a fourth boat, HMCS Chicoutimi. The Admiral visited submariners at Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt, B.C., on Thursday to inform them that they will remain on shore through the Christmas holidays and for at least several weeks in January. Work is now being done to install new electrical insulation on three of the subs, which was a key safety concern identified by a panel of navy experts last month. A Nov. 12 message sent from headquarters in Ottawa stated that the work would take about three weeks.
