Favourite game soundtrack

Post by The Episiarch »

What is your favourite soundtrack from a game?

Personally, my favourite is the soundtrack from the Mechwarrior 2 series (except Mercenaries, which I didn't like as much), I just think it's awesome (BTW does anyone know who the composer(s) was/were?) The atmospheric ambient combined with industrial type of beat goes really well with the image of riding around in a multi-tonnage war machine.

It's good enough to just pop it in the CD player and listen to the soundtrack by itself without playing the game. It's been a while since I've played MW 2, but just listening to the soundtrack and trigger memories of the game itself...

Of course, Star Wars games always have great soundtracks, my favourite is from TIE fighter which (along with Mechwarrior 2) is one of my all-time favourite PC games.

*everything* from Star Control 2 8) (especially the Yehat theme song) .

Grand Admiral Thrawn's theme song from TIE Fighter.

All CD tracks from Mechwarrior 2 (Hell, I even play Quake with MW2 audio tracks).

Act On Instinct, Rain in the Night (great for foreplay), C&C Thang, Just Do It!, and No Mercy from the original Command & Conquer.

Fogger (also a nice foreplay song), Big Foot, and Crush from Red Alert. Funny, I found Hell March is only cool during early parts.

Hell March 2 from Red Alert 2.

Eyes on Me from Final Fantasy VIII (alright, don't laugh!).

Stones from Ultima series.

Opening theme from Quest for Glory 4 1/2: So You Thought You Were a Hero?. In contrary with the raunchy, tongue-in-cheek nature of the game, I found its opening theme is kinda mellow.

Life Magic theme song from Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic.

Opening theme from Crusader: No Regret.

C&C series, of course, Hell March being a cult classic.

Many of TA's tracks are pretty damn epic.

Planescape Torment has some goodies.

The SEGA Genesis/SNES game Desert Strike.

Battlefield series. 1942's intro is great, and the inclusion of real 60s rock in Vietnam was an excellent idea.

Final Fantasy III/VI, whatever you want to call it.

Zelda!

Deus Ex

America's Army theme is pretty cool.

World of Warcraft has some good bites.

Star Wars games, of course.

Probably more I can't think of right now.

Final Fantasy VII

Rome Total War

Those are the only two that really stick in my mind as being great soundtracks where they actually enhanced game play.

The Star Wars games are always good, even though all they tend to do is recycle the movie soundtracks ad nauseum. What I really liked the original music they did for TIE Fighter, even though it was MIDI. The music for the old Wing Commander IV game was good too.

Most songs from Ultima III-IV, specially U3 Wilderness theme.

Also all songs from Star Control II. Those are fucking awesome, wonder what the composer was smoking.

Anything from C&C. Hell March of course, but there a plenty of other memorable tunes. "You've failed. Do not return." :P

The best part about Halo 1 was that kickass theme; in the middle it broke out into something you could do a little jig to. The one for Halo 2 sucks ass, starts off the same, takes forever, get to that build up and you think "Here comes the jig!" and then it just loops back to the start.

And I still say using "People critisize what they cannot understand" is an even wierder instrument to use.

While I like the old standards (TA, C&C, etc.) I've been loving to death the soundtrack to Dawn of War.

Ditto to these.

Also Ditto on Desert Strike (Soviet Strike had an awesome music for their credits), Sonic 2, 3 and Knuckles, Zelda, FF3/6 and 7, as well as various bits from 8.

I love the Quest for Glory music, especially in 1 (ok, mostly just Erana's Peace). QFG 4 blows me away...Tanya and Tobey's theme is just so hauntingly beautiful...that was just a great game overall.

I love Rise FM from GTA3, SF-UR from GTA:SA and Emotion 98.3 from GTA:VC. Also, the original Grand Theft Auto song just plain rocks.

X-Wing and TIE Fighter had good music, as did Jedi Knight (it remixed it's level songs into some cool stuff). The other SW games, of course, but those are the standouts for me.

Jane's USNF '97 had some fun music. I like the opening movie music for the Vietnam campaign the best.

Starcraft and Warcraft II have great music. Homeworld also has that great ambient kind of stuff. I swear I heard Adagio for Strings (Choral) at one point, but I can't be sure (it was on the main menu or something and my friend went by too fast)... :?

I know I'm missing some, but here ya go.
