How do I get linux to shut down all the way?

When it shuts down, it only shuts down sort of half-way, not all the way with all the power gone like how Windows does it. How do I make it so that it shuts down all the way?

I normally just tell it to shut down. It does it. My computer turns off. Not sure what the case is with yours though... (note also using mandrake 10.1)

I think you can probably just hit the off button on your computer once it's halfway shut down. Alternately, you might try the poweroff command.

What command are you using? I find:

shutdown -h now

as root generally does the trick on most distro's I've used

I fixed it. I enabled ACPI in the bootloader option and that did the trick, powered off my computer entirely upon shutdown.

Sort of OT, but I'm quite happy with 10.1 (once you install libdvdcss, of course; I still can't believe that's a criminal offense in the US). It's guilty of the oft-levied charge of feature bloat, but it's not as if you have to click on all of those options, and they're nice to have if your computer is powerful enough (which most computers nowadays are).

ACPI can be somewhat flaky on Linux but that'd do the trick. Another idea would be to enable APM if ACPI doesn't end up working right for you.
