I own the Star Wars Essential Guide to Vehicles. It says the Death Star II is 160 km in diameter. Yet, a website says its 800 km. Which one is it? I'm confused

The second Death Star is much larger than the first.

The Death Star 1 was 160 km across. After it got destroyed the Empire decided to make the DS2 bigger and more powerful. The second Death Star is something around 800 km. Hope this helps.

The Essential Guide is wrong on A LOT of things. The EU says that the DSI was 120 km in diameter, while the DSII was 160 km in diameter. The movies, Incredible Cross Sections, and other sources higher on the canon hierarchy state that the DSI is 160 km, while the DSII is >800 km.

I'd suggest not using the Essential Guides, they're crap. They don't even get the number of engines the Executor had right, and that's a simple counting job.

The DS I was 160k, the DS II was 900km. Official and Canon.

The Essential Guide is known for technical inaccuracies. Don't worry, I have it too.

Lucas intended for it to be 800 km. The designed intended for 800 km. The model compared to the planet in the stills in SW is about 800 km.

Therefore, it is 800 km.

Wow! I didn't realise how huge DS2 was until I saw that size comp, that's incredible. To think that was built between TESB and ROTJ.

The scary thing is that if the Empire could have gone all out, they could have achieved that. It's already been proven that the DSII was very easy for the Empire to construct.

Maybe the first was considered a 'successful field test'. More likely the Emperor had some other spaceborne structure he indended the DS2 to be larger than.

Possibly something to do with the ability to target capital ships or fire more shots repeatedly? I also thought it had something to do with the Emperor wanting to have his own deadly artificial world to rule from, I know the essential guides are crap but they do mention a 100 story observation tower for the Emperor's throne room on the most heavily shielded part of the station, perhaps he was going to rule the galaxy from the DSII rather than Coruscant to project his power anywhere at anytime.
