Invasion!

Post by victorhadin »

19th March, 2009.

At 2:04 GMT, the skies above France, Japan, India and the East coasts of China and the United States turn to searing oven-hot day for an instant. The regions directly beneath the flashes were incinerated completely and the light could be seen for many thousands of miles around each flashpoint. Several electromagnetic pulses the size of which has never been seen hammer South-East Asia, North America and Europe.

In the aftermath, civilisation is briefly reduced to the stone age as all sensitive electronic components are rendered dead and useless. The major powers manage to avoid nuclear conflict and the United States reveal the RADAR records of what may have caused the blasts.

-Several small objects had detonated simultaneously well above the atmosphere, with a power far and away above any nuclear weapon ever created. The objects had been approaching at some 15 kilometres per second before detonation.

They had come from space.

What happens? In the aftermath, who would take charge and what would the world's major powers do about the situation?

OOoh.....creepy.............but this should have gone in OSF.

This is a really cool setup. Are you going to write a fic out of it?

Replace France with Germany in the Security Council and let it make decisions with the requirement of a majority veto of the permanent members instead of a singular.

The EMP effects should be dealt with in a few months.

Then have the security council enforce its decisions with force up to and including nuclear weapons if necessary, and hope we have about a century to explore this and respond.

Well, if not, I'd be willing to take a hack at it. It would probably get y mind of my current fic (and a prospective BOTM fic). It might even help get rid of my writer's block.

It sounds like you're trying to do an alien invasion story of some sort. You might want to read this to avoid some of the more common pitfalls of alien invasion plots.
It's not my place in life to make people happy. Don't talk to me unless you're prepared to watch me slaughter cows you hold sacred. Don't talk to me unless you're prepared to have your basic assumptions challenged. If you want bunnies in light, talk to someone else.

Alien invasion stories have gotten old with Hollywood anyway. What they're into now are corny natural catastrophe movies where a world-changing problem is solved with a few megatons of explosives.
