Turning off safe search was the first thing I did, and the first search term I typed in was "anal sex", which it didn't have.

Ah yes, Google Suggest. It's been around for quite some time, I believe. But the technology behind it is very intresting. It's using javascript to communicate with the server without having to reload the page. I'm using a similar technique on my new web project (although a quite different application - real real time users online counter).

Yes, it uses XMLHttpRequest and JavaScript to do its magic. Gmail does much the same to get its snappy UI.
