Computer's power supply literally blew up

Post by Pu-239 »

My computer's power supply blew up and I had to get an overpriced one from Best Buy for 60$, which is probably worth more then my computer :?

Wierd. When I was a kid I accidentally fucked my power supply by flicking the red switch at the back. Smart.

A few months ago me and one of my mates were playing WarCraft3 on the LAN and the computer he was using emmited a loud BANG!!Fiiiiiizzzz... and instantly shut itself down, I was shitting myself for a while cause I had been playing with that computers clock speed and CPU fan the day before. However it turned out just to be a dead power supply (I had plenty to replace it with). Out of curiosity I opened it up to have a look, and what had happened is one of the massive capacitors inside had blown, spraying its load all over the inside of the supply, to this day have no idea why, it was actually only a few months old itself and wasn't running in a hugely power hungry computer or anything.

Power supplies can be of very poor quality. Spraying their load in people houses is just one of their problems.

Yeah. You're damn lucky it didn't take anything else out with it. I had a 250W PS die on me and it fried a Mitsumi FDD and a Quantum 170MB (which was still going rock solid...unlike anything by Western Digital...*ick*).

Good times.....though $60 seems kind of expensive.

had a 250AT in an older system blow up one time. loud bang and thick black smoke started pouring out the back, the system was still operating too. shut it down normally then opened the window.

the p/s is still working btw... still havn't popped the top to figure out what the hell happened, now true i havn't powered it up since i shut it down that day and the comp was scrapped.

btw, by thick black smoke, i'm meaning like seriously thick, you couldn't see thru the smoke pouring out the back (where it was coming out the fan at least) and it smelled awful. (not as bad as fried athlon though)

another funny thing on that p/s, i later did the calcs on power usage, that 250watt had been running 538watts worth of shit for over 6 months before it let go.

Two things. First off, they tend to skimp on the power supply in order to keep costs down. As a result, personal computer power supplies tend to die with alarming regularity. Second thing, a shitty AC main also contributes to the wear of the cheapie power supply. (Sure power is regular, but in some places it's really "dirty".")

Sounds like that PS was a real trooper to run over twice the rating, then be kind enough to actually let you kill Windows instead of doing the world's quickest FORMAT C: /Y...

also said a lot for the quality of the parts used by Quantex computers...

btw, i know what you mean, nothing sucks worse than being in the middle of a data transfer when the muther-f'ing powersupply decides to pop it's top... time for a format if you're lucky... time for a crapload of new parts, mainly new HDD, if you're unlucky.
