So, I watched first Contact a few days ago, and I was wondering: what are those beam weapons the cube uses? I was wondering whether they're phasers, disrupters, or some other weapon. what do you guys think?
I think there was Voyager episode where they called them disruptors. But that's Voyager...

The Borg have also used a tractor beam like weapon as both a weapon (causing damage) and ensnaring device.

The Borg have used many weapons, including an aparently modified tractor beam that does damage (ref. BoBW), a cutting laser (ref. BoBW), disruptor-like weapons (BoBW, FC, Scorpion IIRC), and torpedoes (ref. ST:FC).

Actually, those green things shown in First Contact were plasma cannon bursts as well. Even a piece of metal the size of a 17" CRT would do more damage KE wise than what was shown in First Contact so they obviously aren't any kind of metallic object, which rules out any torpedoes. (ST:V being the exception in this....damn that movie!)

They use disruptors, tractor beams, torpedoes and shield wackers.

Can anyone give an estimate at the power of these Borg weapons?
Because some of your posts are in the ST vs. SW forum and/or the Other sci-fi. forum, and some of them are in forums where editing is allowed. Personally, I think it's stupid to disallow editing in ST vs SW now that Darkstar is no longer allowed to post here, but I'll leave any policy changes up to Wong.

There is no such movie as ST:V
So "The Final Frontier" never existed eh? Damn! Guess they forgot one.

The Borg can't be using lasers, because the navigational deflectors stop those.
My theory is that the Borg have learned to harness the dread power of technobabble. Their weapons fire bolts or beams of pure, hellish technobabble energy at their targets. It's just a theory, but I think it accounts for a lot. The inconsistancy from one episode to the next is easy to explain: one can never predict how technobabble's characteristics will alter from one day to the next. It also goes a long way towards explaining how a Borg drone can adapt to phaser fire while at the same time remaining vulnerable to a *tommygun*. Finally, it explains *so* much about Borg tactics (or lack thereof.) Imagine what uncounted centuries of exposure to technobabble energy fields would do to your brain?
On second thought, don't imagine that... I just did and I think I'll have nightmares all week

On the E-Ds first encounter the Borg used a laser to cut into the saucer section. And guess what it just s happened to pass through to do this? We never see the navigational deflectors being useful as a combat shield, yet they would have stopped the lasers in the one example. It shows that anything with power can pass right through the navigational defelctors, as did the Borg laser.

While absolutely correct, what brand of stupid are they? Wimpy-ass cutting laser stupid? Craptastic plasma torp stupid? Or maybe even "all-style-and-no-substance-makes-for-flashy-wins" stupid.

The tractor beam does not appear to do damage normally, but appears to be a shield draining weapon instead. Note they've been able to tractor ships(Voyager, for example) without incurring damage to their structure.

I always thought the cutting beam was some sort of tractor beam, based on the way it sliced a piece out of the saucer and carried it off to the borg cube. It's been a *long* time since I saw that episode, I was just left with that impression.
No, it looked very much like a laser; what happened was the tractor beam was locked on to the section, and then a laser carved out the section, allowing the beam to pull it free.
I think Data or someone mentioned a "cutting beam", not sure.
The tractor beam has been shown to do damage (see the DS9 pilot); my guess is that it's a shearing force that rips apart the hull. Or it might wreak havoc with the ship's SIFs, since they had all the knowledge of Picard to go on; they might very well have tailored the tractors to fuck with Federation ships especially well.

Yet with the same beam, they can blow half the saucer off of an Excelsior in a single blast (after shields are drained of course). They obviously have several modes.
