HK-47 vs Boba Fett

Post by Drooling Iguana »

HK-47, with full memories and assassination protocol intact, is activated at around the time of ANH with orders to assassinate a bounty hunter named Boba Fett. He's given a briefing on the changes that the galaxy has undergone between KOTOR and ANH, a brief description of Boba (appearance, basic rundown of equipment, etc.) and the knowledge that he'd be accompanying Jabba the Hutt on Tatooine. Boba is warned that an assassination droid is out looking for him and is given a basic description of HK. What happens?

Yeah, I'm gonna give it to the droid. Boba's fan wank shield can't possibly withstand being hit 120 km away. :P

As much as I like Fett, HK-47 has quite a track record, and is possessed of physical capabilities beyond that of any human. As such, Fett is wasted before he sees HK-47. Fett can't live in Jabba's palace forever, and HK-47 doesn't need sleep, rest or sustenence. He can camp out essentially indefinately and wait Fett out. Plus, HK-47 packs a a a shield and multiple built in weapons such as Flame Throwers, Neural Disruptors, Carbon Projectors and Ion Beams (only two at once, though).

Boba Fett killed three of the IG-88s, one of them in single combat, and their capabilities are very close to an HK. As to who would win, it would depend on who can set up a good enough trap first. If both know to expect each other, then I'd have to say it would be very close.

I can only recall two of Fett's kills on IG-88. The one on Bespin (IIRC) with the shoulder mounted Ion Cannon and the one over Tatooine. Which was the third? As to how close the IG-88s are to HK-47, I can't really say. The only instances I know of them showing up is in BH Tales and the Shadow of the Empire game for N64. I'm wont to discount the game, seeing as it's wildly offbase in so many aspects, such as Dash's ability to shoot down Slave 1 with hand-held weapons, etc.

As I recall, two of the IGs ambushed Fett around Tatooine, and both were destroyed there. I may be off base though, I havent read the tale in years.

As to how close the IG-88s are to HK-47, I can't really say.
They are both heavily modified war droids with similar built in armament and both possess highly adaptive AIs unbound by design specs. However, I dont know how exactly they would measure up in combat. Nevertheless, Boba has destroyed one in ground combat (albeit with a trap, but there's no reason to believe he couldnt cook something up for HK.)

The Ig-88's are probably superior to regular HK-47 by dent of their massive amounts of inbuilt equipment and ability to deflect blaster bolts, however they are not as creative or adaptive as him (probably).

If Fett has no idea that one of the best assasain droids in the galaxy is commisoned after him he may still stand a slight chance if there is a reason for him to be exceptionally wary (high profile bounty captured alive etc..) as well as his extreme sensor suit, but still if HK has a 120 km range sniper rifle there isnt much Fett can do.
Howere where would HK catch Boba fett walking aroun in the middle of the dune sea? If Fett needs to go there he will take his ship and will probably do a sensor sweep over the radius, especially if he sees a lone droid walking around with something on its shoulder.

HK could probably work around this considering his genius for such matters

One thing is that in all the cases where Boba Fett took down an IG-88, he was the hunter. Here, he is the prey. He is at a specific location (Jabba's), while HK-47 is mobile, and although he isn't tied to Jabba's Palace, it gives HK-47 a target, whereas Fett, though aware he's being hunted, doesn't know where his hunter is. This is a key factor. Fett would be able to trap the entrances, but as soon as he leaves the Palace, he enters HK-47's domain. He has no prepared traps or ambushes to rely on. Fett can't simply stay in Jabba's palace, because even then, HK-47 will simply outlast Fett in terms of age.

HK-47 possesses a personal shield, not to mention his array of built in weapons, which I listed. As to Fett's ship, is this a one-on-one confrontation or does Fett get Slave 1? Hk-47 is never shown even piloting a ship, so the option of a ship-to-ship duel seems out. We do see HK-50 models using rocket launchers in KOTOR2, and they are described as second-rate knockoffs of HK-47, so I'd assume he could use one as well.

Addendum: HK-47 begins this mission on a reasonably well-developed but not overly well-known Outer Rim world with no ship or weapons, but with 30,000 Imperial credits with which to equip himself, and forged ownership documents so that he can claim that he's operating on behalf of a human master when he goes to purchase said equipment.

Ah, so this is a bare-bones HK-47 and he's off Tatooine? That gives Fett some time to prepare, and I'll have to reconsider the situation. I had been assuming HK-47 was already on Tatooine and he possessed his full arsenal.

Just going by the movies it seems that the only thing that Boba Fett is any good at is making other people do his dirty work for him. In ESB all he did was track the Falcon to Cloud City then ring up Vader and let him collect 'em; Vader even delivered Solo to him gift wrapped in carbonite. I think that, EU deifying aside, Boba was only legendary because he knew how to manipulate his public image in a favorable fashion. Otherwise he was a lazy bastitch who spent all his time at Jabba's house parties.

So for that reason in itself I think a real professional killer like HK-47 would mop the floor with him. I figure HK-47 could sucker Fett into hiring him to do all the dirty work in collecting an especially dangerous bounty, and then when the smoke clears and Fett shows up to take the prisoner, and the glory, HK-47 could waste him.

I'm no Fett wanker. But what has HK-47 done except made the claim to be able to hit a guy at 120km? Is his claim backed up by anything other than his say so?

If anything, Fett is smart for letting the empire do all his dirty work. Why not use resources available to you if they don't cost a thing.

Hmm from Kotor he was tasked to kill Mandalore after killing an increasing number of higher ranking Mandalorians and failed, was reprogramed, killed his old master.

Then he preceded to kill over a hundred diffrent officals for some company.

His other history is unknow.

Of the targets that HK-47 was sent after, he was only stopped by Mandolore.
HK-47 was designed to hunt and kill jedi, and was quite effictive at it.

However it must be mentioned that one of HK-47's advantages was that he could pass off as a protocol droid, but as protocols droids look different around the time of the movies, that advantage would now be gone.

Standard protocol droids looked quite a bit different from HK-47 back in the KotOR era, too.

If HK-47 has no weapons it's possible that droid tech has changed so much that it's no longer compable with HK-47 (who was prototype to begin with)

Arrogant Statement:I'm sure that droid of my capabilities isn't outdated, I'll kill that meatbag in no time

It's been 4,000 years HK, even you can't be that good.

Consending Statement:you might be right Master

Hk can use normal (non modified) weapons, they simply wont be built in.

Which is ironic, considering HK is completely EU...

Besides, how is that 120 km accuracy even supposed to work? Not only would he have no way of directly seeing his target, but if the bullet takes less than ten seconds to reach the target (that is, if it's going faster than 11.2 km/s), it's going to escape the gravity of the planet and not hit anything. This means plenty of time for Boba Fett to simply move out of the way of the bullet, bolt, missile or whatever it is. It could be a homing missile, but then, that wouldn't be much to brag about...

And why would potentially looking like a protocol droid be of any advantage in this scenario? If you were a lone bounty hunter in the middle of the desert, wouldn't you be a bit suspicious if a protocol droid, seemingly for no reason, approached your castle? Better to blast first and search the smoking wreckage for weapons later.

sure but he's about 4,000 years out of date, so Boba might take even thru full shield and armor (though this far from certain), the thing that makes HK-series so dangerous is that they can act like protocal droid until you turn your back on them and then they attack with the "suprices" inside their bodies.

While EU Fettwank is positively hilarious, anti-Fett stuff can be just as extreme these days. There must be a good reason why Jango was selected as the sole genetic template for an army that was to number into the billions. Even though Boba isn't "uber", can't be that bad.
Citing examples of his shrewd use of Imperial assets, and making it sound as though it was evidence of his inability to accomplish tasks on his own, just doesn't make sense. He also ought to have pretty decent methods and abilities to evade capture or termination, because there must be plenty of folks who want him dead.

Also, while the capabilities of a lot of Fett's gear are EU, I'm assuming he has some sort of sensors in his helmet and suit. Though it's impossible to tell what their capabilities are, I doubt he relies solely on the naked eye to for detection of targets and threats.
Darth Revan wrote:sure but he's about 4,000 years out of date, so Boba might take even thru full shield and armor
I'm not sure what exactly you're saying here, but I don't think that Star Wars technology has changed very much in the past 4,000 years. It probably more or less plateaud (not completely) around five to ten thousand years after the formation of the Galactic Republic. Most of the technological devices in KotoR performs just as well as PT/OT era equipment.
Even if standards for equipment mounts and interface ports have changed, I don't see why HK-47 wouldn't be able to modify either himself or his equipment to allow mounting on his hardpoints, which are supplementary to his handheld weapon anyway.

The horizon is only about 5 kilometers away due to the curvature of a planet of similar diameter to Earth, when seen from the point of view that is approxomately a man's height above ground level. Bringing the 120km effective range into play would be difficult. Wouldn't you need to detect the target first, anyway?

Overall I'd say it could go either way, depending on a myriad of unforeseen circumstances.

Couldn't HK simply have himself "sold" to some lightly armed merchant ship on it's way to Tatooine, slowly kill off all of the crew (in some deviously evil way, of course) and blast Jabbas Palace into a pile of smouldering ruin from orbit?

The whole 120km kneeshot was just an analogy he used to describe what love is. I don't think it nessesarily means that he is capable of doing so.
What we do know of HK-47's abilities, is that he was capable of killing Jedi/Sith as well as standard targets who are no doubt under heavy protection. The latter being that he had assasinated the rivals of his then current master who was a senator, and had also done the same for a Hutt.

Except that protocol droids or droids in general seem to be the 'messengers' of the SW universe. Case in point. 3PO and Artoo heading to Jabba's.
